Purpose StatementA Lead Paraprofessional is an experienced paraprofessional leader invested in the wellbeing and professional growth of new paraprofessionals. The Lead Paraprofessional guides and models, assists with onboarding, and supports communication with building administration.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or GED
- Successful experience working as a paraprofessional
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate well with others
- Valid Iowa Para educator Certificate preferred
- Collaborate with building administration to build onboarding and mentoring for new hires.
- Check in routinely with new hires and support acclimation.
- Cultivate strong professional relationships within the paraprofessional team.
- Maintain consistent communication with the team.
- Provide job shadowing, training, and instructional support.
- Deliver building‑specific training for new staff with the administrative team.
- Serve as a positive role model for the team and broader community.
- Meet regularly with building administration to discuss staffing needs, resolve problems, and improve onboarding.
May vary based on building assignment and student needs.
- Assist teachers in implementing lesson plans by working with individual students or small groups to reinforce instruction.
- Provide one‑on‑one or small group support for students.
- Provide accommodations for students with IEPs, 504 plans, health plans, or other needs.
- Assist teachers in monitoring student progress and provide feedback.
- Support students with instructional technology (Chromebooks, iPads, assistive tech).
- Assist with implementation of behavior intervention plans and sensory strategies.
- Support students with activities of daily living (feeding, toileting, mobility, hygiene) when necessary.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow legal/ethical standards.
- Supervise students in classrooms and non‑classrooms (study hall, media center, hallways, cafeteria, gym, playground, bus, arrival/dismissal).
- Promote and model positive behavior, using de‑escalation and conflict resolution.
- Collaborate with teachers and paraprofessionals to meet student needs.
- Provide excellent customer service to students, parents, and colleagues.
- Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events.
- Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions.
- Use positive communication in all interactions.
- Adhere to safety protocols and district policies.
- Support district goals and remain engaged in work duties.
- Ensure personal devices do not interfere with duties.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
The position requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing, walking, and exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, and communicable diseases. Emotional control under stress is required.
Terms of EmploymentWork year established by the District; salary reviewed annually.
