Assistant Night Stock Department Manager

General Function

Sets the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance and overall profitability. Assists in supervising Night Stock employees. Ensures the trucks are unloaded and merchandise is stocked and stored in an appropriate and orderly manner.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain a positive attitude; create an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork.
  • Encourage employees to greet and speak to customers; provide prompt, courteous, and efficient service.
  • Set department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability.
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner; learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach products, loading/unloading heavy items, and noting customer suggestions or requests.
  • Answer telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service.
  • Order products from warehouse and from grocery to dock; pre‑order non‑food and supplies; track orders and coordinate with assistant managers.
  • Supervise night stock crew; assign work duties and hold consultations with employees.
  • Supervise and direct assistant managers, departments and custodian crews.
  • Review RPM system; set up inventory, monitor understock and backstock, set triggers for reordering, maintain system, remove damaged or mixed picks.
  • Unload trucks and break down pallets; sort items and match them to the correct section.
  • Check vendor deliveries piece by piece.
  • Supervise drop shipment and direct store deliveries.
  • Write schedule for night stock and monitor time‑off, vacation, sick call‑ins and weekly overtime.
  • Train new employees in facing, pull downs, order tags, UPC, checking, sacking, stocking, register handling, customer service, and department services.
  • Monitor productivity and review performance with crew members.
  • Troubleshoot repair of store equipment (electrical, cash register systems, coolers, compressors, etc.).
  • Maintain personal hygiene and dress standards and adhere to company policies.
  • Report to work on time and be present when scheduled.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Run back stock and understock (cereal, paper, juice, fill holes as needed).
  • Assist with customer service during checkout, sacking, carry‑outs; maintain cash accountability and day‑end reports.
  • Open registers for new business days; handle customer issues in person and on phone.
  • Set and reset new items and tags, price items, set in‑store specials.
  • Set prices using cost‑plus percentage or use ad price; tag items and adjust prices when supply runs out.
  • Supervise produce and frozen food truck unloading, ensuring proper cooler placement.
  • Assist in other store areas as needed.
  • Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Skill in composing original correspondence and interpreting written work instructions.
  • Experience in interviewing job applicants and following technical manuals.
  • Strong interpersonal communication.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Three to five years of similar or related work experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities (Direct Reports)

Instruct, assign work, review work, plan work of others, maintain standards, allocate personnel, coordinate activities, select new employees, handle employee problems, recommend promotions, discipline, discharging, and recommend salary increases.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform heavy work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (and in excess of 100 pounds to move objects).
  • Visual requirement: see detail at near range with or without correction.
  • Ability to perform sedentary work, occasionally lift or carry objects no more than 10 pounds, and stand, walk, reach, handle, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions

Occasional exposure to noise, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, chemicals/solvents, and frequent exposure to dirt.

Equipment Used to Perform Job
  • Computer, compressor, RPM system, power jack, compactor, register, forklift, scales, Tomra machines, two‑wheeler, box cutter.
Financial Responsibility

Cash registers, pre‑orders and regular orders, inventory, RPM system and its orders, pricing items/books, and received deliveries.
