Plant Operator / Backup Delivery Driver (CDL
B) at Airgas, Ankeny, IA.
The Plant Operator is responsible for safely operating equipment for the handling and production of packaged gas cylinders, both for high pressure and liquefied gases. The Delivery Driver safely and efficiently delivers compressed gas cylinders to local and regional business customers using a company provided tractor trailer, straight, or box truck.

- Loads and unloads gas cylinders and/or other products onto and off of route trucks and trailers.
- Sorts empty cylinders by type.
- Operates a forklift truck for the movement of cylinders on pallets.
- Reads and interprets cylinder labels and color-coding to understand hazards and accurately label cylinders.
- Handles high-pressure, medical and liquid cylinders; prepares high-pressure cylinders and cryogenic vessels for filling; attaches to manifold and evacuates cylinders.
- Performs basic cylinder maintenance such as painting, labeling, and cleaning of work area.
- Inspects cylinders prior to filling following government and company standards; conducts safety checks, odor tests, and verifies caps and valves.
- Fills cylinders by pressure and weight per regulations and standards.
- Assists with inventory and manages paperwork to DOT, FDA, OSHA, and Airgas standards.
- Maintains a neat, clean, and orderly plant appearance.
- Loads, delivers, and unloads cylinders safely; records deliveries, obtains signatures, and returns empty cylinders.
- Establishes and maintains good customer relations; resolves service inquiries and complaints.
- Provides timely communication to manager or customer’s sales associate regarding changes or issues.
- Maintains load manifests and vehicle documents in compliance with DOT, EPA, FMCSA, FDA, OSHA, and Airgas safety standards.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and reports deficiencies.
- Ensures all safety rules are strictly observed; reports accidents or injuries promptly.
- Other duties as assigned.
- HS Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- One year of experience in manufacturing operations or loading preferred.
- Strong background in gas, welding, safety supply or chemical industry preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse people.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability to safely operate a forklift.
- Basic math skills.
- Lives by Airgas safety programs, OSHA, and related rules, regulations, procedures.
- Valid Class B Driver’s License and at least one year of Class B professional driving experience within the last five years with clean driving record.
- Minimum age 21 years or older.
- Valid Medical Examiner’s Card.
- Hazmat & Airbrake Certifications, or ability to acquire them.
- Prior experience in gas, welding, or safety supply industry preferred.
