Job Overview
Old Dominion Freight Line seeks a dedicated Dockworker to ensure safe, efficient loading and unloading of freight while supporting overall warehouse and material handling operations. The role requires a strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and teamwork to deliver freight accurately and on time.
Responsibilities- Load and unload freight on trailers using a motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual techniques in compliance with state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Apply loading techniques such as tight or cross loading, securing freight with airbags, straps, cardboard, and appropriate tools.
- Transport freight within the service center on non‑forgiving surfaces, using a dock yard management system to monitor shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and various freight movement forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, exception forms).
- Hand‑load, rewrap, or stack freight as necessary to ensure quality loading and secure placement in trailers.
- Maintain frequent communication with service center personnel, responding quickly to deadlines.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience and working knowledge of safe lifting, transporting procedures, and loading techniques.
- Ability to complete freight movement forms and use the dock yard management system.
- Must be available to work all shifts and meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Proficiency with handheld tablets when required.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English; standing, sitting, walking, bending, and lifting up to 100 lbs. as described in the Physical Demands section.
- Stand up to 8 hours per shift on non‑forgiving surfaces.
- Sit on forklift up to 8 hours per shift.
- Walk up to 8 hours per day on potentially wet or slippery surfaces.
- Perform frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, and stooping to handle freight.
- Climb on and off forklifts and maneuver in confined spaces as needed.
- Load and unload trailers weighing up to 500 lbs. with or without a dolly or cart, moving containers, drums, tires, or cartons overhead.
- Push and pull freight up to 100 lbs., including forklift blades, gas tanks, deck bars, and related items.
- Obtain forklift inspections, read bills of lading, scan for debris, and perform cognitive tasks related to safety and logistics.
- Work in hot or cold climates, and in environments with noise, odors, or varying lighting conditions.
