Position: Medical Support Assistant (Advanced)

Summary

The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant assigned to Community Care Service. The Community Care team generally consists of two registered nurse care navigators and three to four administrative associate MSAs per team.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all educational, certification, and experience requirements listed below:

  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen or non‑citizen according to 38 U.S.C. 7407(a).
  • Education:

    One year post‑high‑school education or at least a high‑school diploma (including homeschooling or GED) or an equivalent proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education. Applicants who do not meet these education levels must have been a Medical Support Assistant (GS‑0679) on a permanent appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs as of February 5, 2026, meeting all qualification requirements as part of the grandfathering provision.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Experience:

    One year of experience at the GS‑5 Medical Support Assistant grade level, performing duties such as answering phones, greeting patients, relaying messages, scheduling appointments, and interpreting provider orders.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Ability to collaborate with a wide range of medical clinicians; independently set priorities; communicate effectively in person, by phone, electronically, and in writing; prepare reports and present data; advanced knowledge of technical health‑care processes, policies, and medical terminology; ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate care in the community under the Mission Act Standards.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with patients, the interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
  • Assist with discharges and communications between VA and non‑VA medical facilities.
  • Facilitate secure messaging with patients and teams; notify patients of normal lab results.
  • Manage tracking systems for follow‑up care such as consults and tests.
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties for the department.
  • Participate in team huddles and meetings to manage patient care, set priorities, and meet scheduling deadlines.
  • Adjust workflow to meet team and patient needs.
  • Enter appropriate information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Monitor pre‑appointment requirements to ensure readiness for patient care in the community.
  • Maintain active and scheduled lists of consulting community care.
  • Contribute to problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings.
  • Follow up on administrative actions and provide input in team huddles.
  • Precept and train new staff or team members, ensuring continuity of care.
Physical Requirements

The role is generally sedentary but may involve walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items. It can be stressful during peak clinic hours or days with high patient volume.

Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. Telework and virtual options are not available.
