Job Title
The Office of the Registrar is looking for motivated, team-oriented Residency Assistants to provide support to the student services area.
Job DescriptionReporting to the Assistant Registrar for Residency, you will provide student support by answering questions regarding in-state residency and processing routine transactions related to residency applications. Multiple full-time and part-time temporary positions are available beginning in September 2026 for up to six months, with the possibility of extension. These positions are expected to work onsite.
ResponsibilitiesProvide frontline support for the Residency Office by serving as a primary point of contact for students, parents, and staff regarding in-state residency matters.
Responsibilities include:
- Gain and maintain a thorough understanding of the University of Michigan's guidelines for in-state residency classification. Clearly and effectively explain policy details and application procedures to a wide range of audiences, including students, families, and staff.
- Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries via phone, email, and the university's ticketing system related to in-state residency applications, procedures, timelines, and policy guidelines. Ensure a high standard of customer service in all interactions.
- Accurately record the details of all communications, questions, and guidance provided using the Administrative Work Center system to ensure consistency and documentation of services rendered. Coordinate the receipt, handling, and secure storage of confidential documents submitted in support of in-state residency applications. Ensure proper organization and classification of electronic documents.
- Evaluate the nature of student inquiries and refer complex or case-specific issues to appropriate Residency Office staff for further assistance. Exercise judgment in prioritizing and escalating cases as necessary. Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion when working with sensitive student information, adhering to all university policies and FERPA regulations.
- Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable customer service experience and experience with appropriately handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently, with routine supervision.
- A high level of organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of FERPA and other federal/state laws and regulations related to higher education.
- Experience or familiarity with typical policies and procedures of an institution of higher education.
- Experience or familiarity with student information systems, such as Oracle People Soft Campus Solutions.
