Job Summary

You will receive and prepare patients for dental treatment. You will prepare work surfaces and materials for use by the dentist.

This position will also assist the dentist at chair-side in the treatment of patients. You will also assist with oral examinations and charting under the supervision of the dentist. You will perform dental radiography work and may assist in the development and revision of training procedures and assist in the training of dental students. This position will also keep records of appointments, examinations, treatments, and supplies.

Responsibilities*
  • Assist in a wide variety of chair-side surgical procedures using the principles of four-handed dentistry.
  • Specializing in the treatment of medically and/or mentally compromised patients while working with dental students, residents and faculty.
  • Perform general assisting duties that include processing contaminated/sterile instruments, set up/tear down Operating Room and treatment rooms, seat patients and prepare for treatment, assist with preliminary health and physicals prior to treatment, take vitals, obtain consents.
  • Coordinate and maintain the inventory, ordering and distribution of dental supplies, instruments and equipment.
  • Expose and develop radiographs according to standard procedures or specific instructions
  • Clean, disinfect and arrange work surfaces, storage cabinets, sinks and dispensing areas.
  • Coordinate the proper maintenance and set-up or dental equipment and operations
  • Process patient cared orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
  • Assist patient in scheduling on the phone or in person.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications *
  • Certification by the DANB (Dental Assisting Board) is necessary
  • Registered Dental Assistant License current
  • BLS certification and a certificate in Radiology is necessary
  • AAOMS sedation training is desirable
  • Reasonable knowledge of dental clinic practices and procedures is necessary
  • Some knowledge of university policies, practices and regulations is desirable.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Work Schedule

Schedule 7:45 to 4:45 most Mondays - Fridays, a couple of times a month, staggered start of 8:30 to 5:30 depending on clinic needs

Additional Information

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
