As a part of a strategic partnership with the City of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Community College provides programming to youth and adults at the Parkridge Community Center. WCC will host its annual Parkridge Summer Camp, a 5-week Summer Learning Experience for up to 48 students. This experience will consist of in-person academic and enrichment programming for youth, 6-12 years old. Our team of educators, staff, students and volunteers will engage participants in a variety of academic skill building and enrichment activities.
The goal is to increase each child's learning capacity by improving their academic, social and technology skills.
Position Summary:
The Summer Learning Experience Instructors are responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, empowering and engaging courses to provide an enriching and educationally sound summer camp for the Parkridge Summer Camp Summer Learning Experience. They will lead in the development, planning and implementation of academic programming. These positions are temporary ending at the conclusion of Summer Camp in August 2026
Essential
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop curriculum and lead classroom activities that match and support Parkridge Summer
Learning Experience academic enrichment goals, framework and in alignment with weekly themes.
Establish and maintain an environment conducive to student learning.
Implement assessments/evaluations for determining student success on assignments, projects, classroom participation and the course.
Participate in professional activities including curriculum planning, examination development, textbook selection, program evaluation/revision and other professional planning activities.
Evaluate student progress through day-to-day evaluation, written examinations, and overall observation.
Research, gather and prepare materials necessary for implementing a creative curriculum.
Plan and execute daily weekly sessions for youth.
Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support teaching, learning, student engagement, professional responsibilities, institutional service, and other responsibilities. Use such technologies in a manner consistent with academic standards, professional ethics, confidentiality requirements, and compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
Other duties as assigned by the Manager of College and Career Readiness, Summer Camp Coordinator, or designee.
Work Environment:
In-Person at the Parkridge Community Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Human Development or a Related Field.
Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with a current Michigan Department of Education Endorsement in Elementary Education and/or Secondary Education.
A minimum of two years' teaching experience in an Urban Education District.
Experience working students who possess opportunities for learning level improvement/advancement.
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to appropriately handle confidential matters/materials
Strong class management skills
Demonstrated ability to use technology relevant to the discipline and faculty role, including the capacity to learn and appropriately utilize emerging AI-supported tools. Ability to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and appropriateness of AI-generated content; maintain confidentiality where required; exercise professional and academic judgment; and uphold ethical standards in the use of technology for teaching, learning, and service.
