Peer Tutor – Part‑time
Washtenaw Community College is looking for qualified peer tutors in a range of subject areas. Peer tutors assist students in developing academic skills and knowledge through individual and group tutoring, workshops, and supplemental instruction.

The Part‑time Peer Tutor serves as a “model student” to WCC students seeking tutoring. Peer tutors help students learn how to learn and develop general academic skills and subject‑specific knowledge.
EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
- Familiarity with course content, study strategies, and content‑based knowledge within assigned disciplines.
- Facilitate student learning by clarifying specific course content and promoting appropriate study strategies.
- Work with students (online and in person) individually, in groups, workshops, and supplemental instruction.
- Exhibit excellent communication skills and adapt methods to meet students’ learning styles.
- Participate in the research, development, and delivery of student‑centered workshops and supplemental academic resources that focus on study‑skill development.
- Possess some familiarity with learning technology including Canvas, Zoom, discipline‑specific software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Become familiar with Learning Resource Division resources and direct users to appropriate campus and virtual resources. Refer students to additional campus resources such as Disability Services, Academic Advisors, Success Coaches, and the Student Resource Center when needed.
- Represent the Academic Success Center at college‑sponsored activities.
- Use technology, including AI‑enabled tools, to enhance performance, productivity, communication, and information management, while complying with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Attend department and division meetings as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintain regular attendance on campus.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Applicants must have 10 hours of availability within the hours of operation posted below. Tutors typically work 8–15 hours per week, not to exceed 20, and only when classes are in session.
- Monday–Thursday 9 am–8 pm;
Friday 10 am–1 pm (Fall, Winter) - Monday–Thursday 10 am–6 pm (Spring, Summer)
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in college coursework or be in good academic standing in one or more of the listed areas of need.
- Computer proficiency.
- Willingness to remain current on course materials, as determined by faculty.
- Encourage student success by creating an inclusive environment of belonging and high achievement.
- Understand the importance of student privacy and follow campus confidentiality rules.
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal communication.
- Work successfully with diverse students of all ages, ethnicities, genders, backgrounds, and achievement levels.
- Strong public‑service commitment and positive attitude.
- Assume responsibility and work enthusiastically with minimal supervision.
- Provide feedback to improve departmental practices and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education related to the job function, including departmental training, semiannual essential training, and recommended professional development programs and in‑service sessions as assigned by supervisor.
- Use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI‑supported tools. Assess the accuracy and reliability of AI‑generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintain regular attendance on campus.
