Works as a member of the educational team to assist special education students in meeting their full academic and behavior potential through providing: direct instruction and support services to students in accordance with established IEP’s; limited assessments and evaluations to determine learning deficiencies and needs; and consultative and advisory assistance to classroom teachers.
Essential Job Functions- Responsible for implementation of an approved curriculum and individual IEP for each student assigned.
- Develop and monitor student performance objectives and maintain documentation such that instructional methods are consistent with IEP.
- Maintain Resource Room schedule, supplies and equipment.
- Identify and order instructional materials, texts, and equipment to assist students in meeting educational objectives.
- Implement standardized assessment tests for each student and record results.
- Prepare clear, usable lesson plans for each student in accordance with IEP established goals, maintain substitute plans and activities, and complete student file information as needed.
- Serve as a member of the Multi-disciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) providing supportive assessment data and recommendations to team members, as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor.
- Implement an on‑going assessment procedure to the current level of student performance. Communicate results of diagnostic testing and teaching strategies attempted to the MET for incorporation into the MET report.
- Develops and implements behavior modification techniques as needed in order to promote positive behavior patterns.
- Serve as a consultant in reviewing academic learning problems and determining appropriate course of action.
- Serve as a member of the Child Study Team in reviewing student academic learning issues and in making recommendations for diagnostic testing and evaluation.
- Attend IEPC meetings and prepare annual program goals and short term instructional objectives.
- Monitor student files and schedule annual reviews, re‑evaluations, transfer, and transitional IEP’s as required.
- Maintain student attendance records as required by the Principal.
- Maintain on‑going communication and working relationships with parents, guardians, district personnel, and other individuals related to special education service delivery.
- Must hold and maintain current CPI certification in verbal de‑escalation and physical restraint (training provided by the school district).
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Responsible for appropriate and meaningful instruction to foster the academic growth and achievement of students.
- Responsible for the safety and well being of all students assigned to classroom or area of instruction.
Has contact with students, school staff, parents, community, Board members, Intermediate District personnel, and State and Federal agencies.
Qualifications- Valid Michigan Special Education Teaching Certificate.
- Two years previous teaching experience preferred.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Patience, tolerance, and ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Constructively participates in meetings with parents and staff.
- Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and professionalism in a variety of situations.
- Must complete and pass a criminal history background check according to applicable laws and school board policies.
- Must comply with all rules and regulations pertaining to safety.
- Must be able to speak English (speak, read, write, and comprehend).
- Interaction with a wide variety of students, including those with special needs.
- May have occasional exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
