University of Michigan - Ann Arbor - LEO Lecturer I

The Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applications for a non-tenure-track LEO Lecturer I position in African American Studies. We welcome applications from candidates across disciplines and specializations, including but not limited to Afro-Diasporic Studies, African American Studies, slavery studies, popular culture, new media, film and media studies, legal studies, critical technology studies, and environmental humanities.

We seek candidates whose teaching and scholarship will complement and strengthen the department's interdisciplinary community of scholars and educators. DAAS is a vibrant academic unit dedicated to the study of the lives, experiences, cultures, histories, and societies of peoples of African descent in Africa and across the African diaspora, including communities in the United States and North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia.

Our curricula and research span the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

For example, the successful candidate will teach survey courses in African American studies, as well as courses within their area of specialization. Candidates with the ability to teach large-enrollment courses are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will also contribute to the intellectual and pedagogical strengths of the department. This is a university-year appointment with an anticipated start date of August 31, 2026.

Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching. Candidates must either hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment or be ABD (All But Dissertation).

This is not a tenure-track position. The initial appointment will be for one academic year and can be renewed based on instructor performance and available funding.

Responsibilities

The person in this position will teach six courses per year, developed in consultation with the DAAS Director of Undergraduate Studies. Other instructional responsibilities include overseeing any course Grader, if applicable; holding office hours for students; course planning and grading; appropriate use of courseware and other classroom technology.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must either hold a Ph.D. by the time of appointment or be ABD (All But Dissertation). Experience teaching courses with variable styles of delivery. The successful candidate must have cutting-edge and contemporary knowledge and experience in teaching and practice in the field.

Additional Information

Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching is highly desired. Salary is expected to be $51,000 reflecting 100% effort for 8 months.
