- Bachelor's degree in Special Education
- Master's degree in a related field (CI, ASD, or SLD preferred)
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in Special Education (CI preferred)
- Evidence of highly qualified status as defined through NCLB, to be provided at interview
- Three years of satisfactory teaching experience, including at least two years with students with disabilities in a special education classroom preferred
- Knowledge of appropriate grade-level curriculum
- Strong collaboration skills
- Experience providing direct instruction and consultation for students with cognitive impairment and other communication disorders preferred
- Experience with applied behavior analysis, TEACCH, PECS, START, social skills, and community-based practices preferred
- Knowledge and experience with special education procedures, including writing individualized education plans, data collection, and adherence to timelines preferred
- Experience supervising or planning for para‑educators preferred
- Experience communicating and working with parents preferred
- Proof of COVID vaccination required
- Plan individualized educational programs that meet student needs and conform to curriculum standards and state/federal guidelines
- Modify and implement effective strategies for students with cognitive impairment
- Participate in Assistive Technology planning and implement low‑ to high‑tech supports in the school setting
- Collect data and conduct progress monitoring
- Assist students with activities of daily living (e.g., toileting, self‑care, mobility)
- Implement Health Care Plans under the supervision of the school nurse
- Provide evaluative services and collaborate with itinerant special education staff (speech, OT, PT, etc.) and general education staff
- Plan for and supervise support staff
- Communicate with parents and caregivers
- Attend and participate in IEP, staff, and professional development meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the administrator
- Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
- Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Interpret extensive statistical information related to student achievement
- Frequently required to stand, talk, or hear and sometimes walk and sit
- Occasionally required to bend or twist at the neck, push or lift up to 50 lbs (e.g., boxes of books or AV equipment)
- Required to meet demands from multiple people and interact publicly with other staff
- Requires relatively good close vision for reading handwritten or typed material and ability to adjust focus
- Engage with a diverse student population and interact with the public and staff
- Respond to multiple demands from various individuals in a typical school setting
- Requires general physical safety and well‑being responsibilities for others
