SUMMARY: Provides support to the instructional process as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. This includes developing lesson plans and delivering group and/or individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues. Additionally, the classroom teacher is to respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress, including as case manager for students with specific learning disabilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers and develops lesson plans and instructional materials which translate into learning experiences based on IEPs, district curriculum guides, standards, research-based best instructional practices, well-defined learning objectives, student needs, and school/district expectations; includes emergency plans in the case of absence and/or illness
  • Communicates and plans with other members of the staff in the delivery of meaningful instruction for shared students who participate in other programs such as general education, CTE, ELL, etc.
  • Attends staff meetings, district in-service programs (see MCL 380.1327), and professional development activities which enhance professional preparation and enhance professional skills which permit maintenance of a Michigan certification
  • Serves and collaboratives with school and District staff on various committees, as requested and able
  • Facilitates instructional and non-instructional school-related activities in a thorough and timely manner, such as:
    • Evaluates, provides, and maintains accurate reports and records of individual student progress on a regular basis, including attendance records, grade reports, and special program requirements
    • Reports any student injury or illness or injury to self on school grounds or at school events to the site nurse and principal
    • Enforces and follows the school and district-approved discipline plan, and refers unusual student behavior to the appropriate specialist
    • Is responsible for the supervision of students at all times on school grounds or at school events
    • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student educational needs and progress
    • Interprets and communicates school policies and programs to students and parents
    • Submits and justifies purchasing recommendations to support and enhance the instructional program to the Site Principal or designee
  • Supervises, evaluates, and provides work assignments to assigned instructional assistants and/or student teachers, and may be responsible for the evaluation and supervision of classified staff
  • Acts as a supportive and contributing member of the professional staff by participating in group decision making, and contributing to the development of a positive, cooperative educational environment
  • Advises administration in accordance with established policies and completes all required forms and records accurately and in a timely manner, including school and district property inventory, repairs, replacements, and unsafe building conditions.
  • Follows school regulations regarding emergency procedures
  • Reports to work daily at the times assigned, and remains on duty through the time prescribed.
  • Performs supervisory duties on school grounds or at school events which protect the health and safety of students and other employees

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of accepted instructional techniques and methods working with children
  • Knowledge of data usage, including research, collection, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, and reporting
