Job SummaryThe Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a joint academic department with reporting lines to the College of Engineering and the Medical School. The dual-school environment includes a growing faculty roster within both schools, a large and increasing collaborative research portfolio, multi-building research facilities, innovative instructional programs at all academic levels, and a focus on research translation and entrepreneurship. BME is pursuing strategic goals to establish enhanced connections within and beyond both schools.
By launching shared facility cores to enable faculty success in research and providing an educational experience for undergraduate students through Ph.D. candidates, BME strives to best prepare graduates for the multitude of career options at the interface of engineering, life sciences, and medicine.
The Student Services Team within the Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking an Academic Advisor/Counselor. This role reports to the Student Services Manager. This position will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional customer service to both prospective and current undergraduate Biomedical Engineering students.
Responsibilities*The BME Undergraduate Academic Advisor is responsible for delivering comprehensive advising and support services to both prospective and declared BME undergraduate students. The advisor is on an undergraduate advising team and therefore works closely with the other Undergraduate and Pre-Health Advisor. The advisor also manages and executes various student services events, maintains accurate advising records, and facilitates effective communication with students and staff.
Advise and Support Students (80%)
- Provide accurate advising and counsel regarding academic options through 1:1 appointments and drop-in advising for prospective and declared BME undergraduate students, students interested in pre-health, and Cellular and Molecular Biomedical Science Major (CMBS) students.
- Maintain accurate records for meetings with students including note taking, and communicating sensitive information to the appropriate staff.
- Provide timely and professional customer service responses to inquiries through the team's shared Student Services BME Advising inbox.
- Provide accurate communication for academic milestones (such as registration, graduation, etc.) through various communication channels including the student newsletter and Canvas Page.
- Facilitate 1:1 orientation meetings for both UM cross campus and external transfer students.
- Oversee the prospective undergraduate student campus visit experience by arranging advising appointments and department/campus tours.
- Triage matters to the Student Services Manager, Undergraduate Chair or UM campus resources as appropriate.
- Participate in professional association(s) to stay current on advising education and trends.
Support BME Student Services (15%)
- Support 1-5 Peer Advisors (current BME students) who also provide 1:1 advising appointments to prospective and current students.
- Support Recruitment, Graduation, the BME Open House, and other departmental events that contribute to student enrichment.
- Assist with outreach events specifically geared toward prospective students.
- Serve as a back-up support to other student services staff, including, the Master's and PhD advisors, Career Planning and Alumni Engagement Coordinator, the Student Services Manager, as well as the BME Student Services Assistant.
- Provide feedback and support for continuous process improvements.
Manage Administrative Tasks (5%)
- Participate in the Undergraduate Program Advisors Group in Engineering (UPAGE).
- Support the Undergraduate Education Committee (UEC).
- Provide responses to survey and data requests.
- Assist the communications team with documentation and course management for the BME website.
