POSITION SUMMARY

Ann Arbor Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified Elementary English Learner (EL) Teacher to provide specialized English language development instruction and support for multilingual learners at the elementary level. The Elementary EL Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, intervention staff, and school administrators to ensure English Learner (EL) students have equitable access to rigorous, grade-level instruction while developing English language proficiency.

The Elementary EL Teacher designs and delivers standards-aligned English language development instruction based on students' language proficiency levels and individual learning needs. Using research-based ESL strategies, sheltered instruction practices, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, the teacher supports students in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while promoting academic success across content areas.

This position requires expertise in second language acquisition, language development, culturally responsive instruction, and collaborative consultation. The successful candidate will build strong partnerships with staff and families, advocate for multilingual learners, and foster an inclusive learning environment where students' linguistic and cultural assets are recognized and valued.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in education or higher
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsements in ESL (NS) or Bilingual Education (YT) (K-8 or K-12)
  • SIOP Training Preferred
  • Previous experience working with multilingual learners and their families
  • Experience working with newcomers and recently arrived students
  • Knowledge of elementary student expectations, including academic, social, emotional, and behavioral milestones
REQUIREMENTS:

Have demonstrated instructional techniques that make content accessible to all learners and to all levels of language proficiency, such as:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support

Provide instruction to support English language and content development

Provide targeted language acquisition support for newcomers and ELs who have reached a plateau in their academic and linguistic growth

Introduce and develop grade-level proficiency of academic and content concepts and vocabulary

Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff to provide accommodations for instruction and assessment to make district content more accessible to ELs

Student Assessment and Placement

Provide assistance in identifying potential ELs

Identify ELs for appropriate class placement/scheduling using various measures

Maintain accurate records: HLS, PNL, WIDA/Kindergarten Screener

Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports

Collaboration and Advocacy

Ability to work effectively between multiple elementary buildings

Provide classroom teachers and support staff with the cultural and linguistic background of language minority students

Advocate for multilingual students and their families

Serve on Achievement Team Meetings, IEPs, or METs where ELs are involved

Adapt to changing work priorities and maintain flexibility in diverse working conditions

Professional Development

Facilitate professional development at the building level in best practices in English language acquisition methods (SIOP)
