Job Summary

The Associate Director of Student Academic Affairs provides leadership and operational oversight for academic policy petitions and academic integrity processes within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan. Reporting to the Director of Student Academic Affairs, the Associate Director plays a critical role in managing academic policy petition matters and academic integrity processes. They also assist in managing student support cases referred from the Dean of Students Office, while supporting SAA's ability to scale in response to sustained undergraduate enrollment growth.

The Office of Student Academic Affairs (SAA) plays an important role in the undergraduate educational mission of LSA. Sitting within LSA's Division of Undergraduate Education (UGED), SAA serves as an advocate and support for more than 19,000 undergraduate students across over 100 degree programs. SAA provides support to students, faculty, and staff who are navigating challenging situations and in creating an inclusive learning environment.

The office also provides guidance on college academic policies, manages the exception process, and oversees the academic misconduct process for LSA. Lastly, SAA includes the degree auditing unit for the college which supports academic policy and registrar-associated functions.

Responsibilities*

  • Overseeing academic integrity adjudication and procedural processes, while guiding and supporting the Coordinator of Academic Integrity in the adjudication of cases, procedural oversight and implementation of best practices related to academic integrity.
  • Supports academic integrity education and prevention efforts, including the development of resources, training, and outreach for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist the Director in coordinating and managing student support cases referred from the Dean of Students Office that intersect with academic standing, enrollment actions, and college policy.
  • Ensure consistency, equity, and compliance in academic policy application and decision-making across cases.
  • Provide guidance to faculty and departments navigating academic integrity issues and challenging student situations.
  • Assess trends in academic policy actions, misconduct cases, and student support referrals and recommend process or policy improvements.
Operational and Strategic Support (25%)

  • Provide senior-level operational support to student records and degree audit functions during peak enrollment and graduation periods.
  • Assist in managing workflows related to academic standing actions, enrollment exceptions, and policy-based reviews.
  • Support the development and refinement of procedures that mitigate institutional risk and ensure FERPA and policy compliance.
  • Contribute to assessment and documentation efforts related to student academic affairs processes.
Collaboration and Institutional Partnerships (15%)

  • Collaborate closely with the Dean of Students Office, advising units, departments, and other campus partners to coordinate student-centered interventions.
  • Represent Student Academic Affairs on committees, working groups, and cross-functional initiatives as delegated by the Director.
  • Support faculty- and staff-facing education related to academic integrity, policy application, and student support resources.
Supervision Received

General supervision is received from the Director of the Office of Student Academic Affairs.

Supervision Exercised

Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over 2-4 full-time professional staff.

Required Qualifications*
  • Advanced degree in higher education, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience (5+ years) in student academic affairs, student conduct, academic advising, student records, or a closely related area within higher education.
  • Proven ability to manage complex and sensitive cases requiring sound judgment, discretion, and adherence to policy, equity, and confidentiality.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty and academic departments, including providing guidance on policy interpretation and academic integrity concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and develop staff.
  • Proven track record of operational improvement and innovation.
  • Knowledge of academic policies and governmental regulations, including FERPA
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, including the ability to manage multiple workflows, assess trends, and contribute to data-informed decision-making.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex policies clearly to students, faculty, and staff.
