Education and ExperienceMaster's Degree in Education from an accredited institution with emphasis in supervision, administration, curriculum, or related field. Five years of successful teaching and/or counseling experience at the secondary level preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsTeaching Certificate with secondary level endorsement or special coursework related to secondary education preferred. Valid Michigan administrative certification (or ability to obtain). Meet the criteria established by North Central Association for principals.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAttendance monitor, oversee attendance policies, address truancy issues, and work to improve student attendance rates. Collaborate with local community centers to support students. Serve as a liaison between school administration, students, staff, parents, and community centers. Know and support all high school students. Assist the Principal in implementing and supporting the District's instructional and operational goals as articulated by the Superintendent.
Evaluate instructional and non-instructional staff and make appropriate recommendations. Collaborate to provide the school community leadership, vision, and direction. Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for student, staff, and families. Demonstrate a self-reflective, innovative, anti-racist, equity-focused set of core beliefs. Co-create an anti-racist, collaborative environment among staff, students, families, and the greater Ann Arbor community. Responsible for discipline and the fostering of good conduct.
Plan and execute grade specific activities and events, such as middle school to high school transition. Planning and executing first-year orientation for incoming 9th-grade students. Working with grade-level counselors to coordinate support services and academic accommodations. Coordinating and communicating disciplinary action as needed. Attentiveness to administrative detail. The ability to make unpopular decisions, take responsibility, and set boundaries in the face of unreasonable demands and persistent concerns.
Create and monitor student intervention plans. Plans and implements programs designed to develop student social emotional learning. Actively provides follow-up student discipline in regard to teacher and campus referrals using Restorative Justice Practices and the AAPS Rights & Responsibilities guidelines. Meets and confers with parents and school personnel in developing alternative solutions to student attendance and discipline problems and concerns.
Support International Baccalaureate philosophies. Attend International Baccalaureate training as required. Improve and expand the educational opportunities and planning for all students, including students with diverse and special needs. Demonstrate proficiency with culturally responsive pedagogy and instructional techniques/tools. Foster a dynamic school culture centered on holistic, inclusive learning communities. Work with diverse ethnic and socio-economic groups and maintain positive relations with all members of the school community.
Foster community relationships and partnerships that support students. Select, supervise, and evaluate all staff and collaborate with teachers in improving teaching and learning. Maintain a learning community with high standards of instructional excellence in curriculum, instructional methods, instructional supervision and coaching, student assessment, and school improvement and planning. Serve on school and district-wide committees and represent the school as otherwise may be directed.
Assist in general supervision, including evening and/or weekend activities, as necessary. Other duties as assigned.
