SUMMARYThe Adaptive Physical Education Teacher will develop, implement and maintain an appropriate physical education program for special education students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to examine how his/her/their position (directly or indirectly) impacts educational inequities in student achievement outcomes.
- Engages in reflection and ongoing learning and development on critical concepts and terms identified in the Washtenaw ISD Educational Equity Policy including concepts such as cultural proficiency, racial equity, and systemic and structural inequities.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice and inclusive practices.
- Develops and implements an instructional program that will give students the opportunity to develop motor abilities.
- Provides instruction in recreation and leisure time activities.
- Plans and schedules community-based recreation instruction (examples: bowling, ice skating, fishing)
- Develops and maintains an appropriate relationship with parents and informs them of the student’s progress as necessary.
- Develops and maintains an appropriate, cooperative working relationship with other classrooms and supportive service staff.
- Develops and maintains an appropriate record keeping system.
- Provides supervision and direction to all non-certified personnel working with students in the physical education setting.
- Provides adaptive techniques/plans for Honey Creek physical education teachers to utilize when including special education students in unified physical education classes.
- Co-teaches physical education classes which include typical and special students.
- Supports the WISD vision and mission to enhance achievement for all students.
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Maintains regular, predictable attendance.
- PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE- Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education.
- Experience with special education students in a school setting preferred.
- Experience working with or possesses the ability to work with preschool through adult level students including all disability categories.
- Valid Michigan teacher's certificate (Physical Education).
- Adapted Physical Education Certificate.
- Current Lifeguard Certification.
- Demonstrates ability to read, analyze and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, or governmental regulation.
- Demonstrates ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Demonstrates ability to use a personal computer (PC) or MAC in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communications mechanisms, such as email conferencing.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software) is required.
