Robotics Coding Mentor

We seek compassionate and responsible adults to serve as robotics coding mentors in our after school-day Middle School FIRST Tech Challenge (MS FTC) and Upper School FIRST Robotics Challenge (US FRC) robotics program hosted at the Greenhills Arbor Hills Campus. The robotics program includes students from Middle School, grade 6,7,8 and Upper School, grades 9-12.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate several coding sessions per week during the MS and US build season (September to May)
  • Communicate with students/families about all team activities
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all children at all times.
  • Keep student well-being front and center.
  • Create an atmosphere where students feel valued and cared for so that they can take intellectual risks
  • Support children's emotional and social development through positive interactions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and child-friendly shop environment.
  • Communicate promptly with school staff regarding any concerns or incidents.
  • Follow all safety, emergency, and health procedures diligently.
  • Promote inclusion, cooperation, and respect among all children.
  • Inspect and immediately notify appropriate staff of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects with shop and equipment.
  • Expose students to new technologies, skills, and knowledge to increase their interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.
  • Demonstrate general management skills for students learning to code, and knowledge in helping students organize code (through a program like the Google Suite or Git Hub).
  • Create opportunities for students to take on leadership roles on the team.
  • Help students improve their problem-solving skills.
  • Help students feel empowered.
  • Other duties as directed.
Skills and Experience Required
  • Must be at least 18 years or older.
  • Must have or be willing to attend FIRST Mentor training and Greenhills staff training.
  • Must pass a criminal background check. All prospective employees undergo fingerprint background checks through the FBI and the state police. Contracts are not binding unless screening results are acceptable to Greenhills School.
  • Ideally, candidates will be able to work the complete Greenhills academic year from September through early June.
  • Knowledge in Java / Block coding
  • Experience with Android Studio / OnBot Java
  • Knowledge of Middle School FIRST Tech Challenge (MS FTC) and Upper School FIRST Robotics Challenge (US FRC) Control Systems and how to operate these systems
  • Knowledge of Middle School FIRST Tech Challenge (MS FTC) and Upper School FIRST Robotics Challenge (US FRC) Actuators / Sensors and how to implement these tools
  • Knowledge of Autonomous logic
  • Knowledge of Collaborative Software such as the Google Suite / Git Hub
Physical Requirements to Perform the Essential Functions
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds as needed
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, as required in a shop environment
  • Stamina to stand and walk for extended periods of time, including indoor and competition supervision.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations (e.g., running, lifting, guiding children to safety)
  • Sufficient vision and hearing to monitor and respond to children's needs and activities
  • Capacity to perform light cleaning duties, such as wiping surfaces or tidying play areas
  • Comfort working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Greenhills School property is a tobacco-free environment.
