Bridge Inspection Engineer

Job Overview

HDR has an opening for a Bridge Inspection Engineer to join our Bridge Group in Michigan at our Ann Arbor or East Lansing offices. The Bridge Inspection Engineer will be expected to perform bridge inspections and requires familiarity with a broad spectrum of bridge inspection equipment, methods, and processes. Field inspections will include National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) inspections, writing field inspection reports, basic mathematical calculations, and performing inspections from ground level, hydraulic equipment, ladder access, or assisted-climbing techniques.

As a Qualified Team Leader, the candidate will supervise the bridge inspection team and support Project Managers in planning inspection activities.

The position will primarily involve bridge inspection and office engineering. Physical effort includes walking up and down slopes, climbing fences, handling ladders, tools, gear and supplies; use of aerial lift equipment, bucket trucks and pickup trucks is necessary. The successful candidate should be comfortable working at substantial heights and alongside busy roads, in traffic-controlled areas, and in inclement weather. Occasional night and weekend work and travel across state and possibly out of state on related assignments will be required.

• Apply structural engineering and detailing techniques
• Work on projects that typically include bridge (steel plate girder, prestressed concrete, segmental and cable) box culvert, and interchange design for highway and railway projects
• Select standard bridge engineering/design procedures, develop structural details using specialized structural design and analysis software, perform structural load calculations and assist with geometric layout and quantity development
• Review, assign work and/or check design calculations, estimates, and specifications produced by junior engineers and EITs
• Perform other duties as needed

• Master's degree in Structural Engineering
• A minimum of 3 years' experience in bridge design

• Bachelor's degree
• Previous experience in bridge design
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license)
• Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu and engineering software packages such as LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB-Multi Pier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, MDX, SAP
  2000, CSiBridge, RM Bridge, sp Column, STLBridge
  
  LRFD, or STLBridge
• Knowledge of ADINA, LUSAS, Bentley Open Bridge Designer and Open Bridge Modeler and/or Autodesk Infraworks and Civil3D
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Micro Station, AutoCAD, MathCAD, LARSA, Prestress Concrete Design
• Experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software
• Experience managing junior staff
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
