Job Title:

Applied Quantum Researcher

Job Description

The Applied Quantum Researcher designs and validates advanced quantum photonic devices and systems with a focus on quantum communication, single-photon generation, entanglement, and low-count measurement techniques. This role combines experimental research, system design, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to develop robust quantum information platforms, prototypes, and intellectual property while actively contributing to a strong safety and research culture.

Responsibilities

+ Design and implement quantum photonic devices and components, with emphasis on quantum communication, single-photon generation, entanglement, and low-count measurement techniques.

+ Architect and design the assembly of individual components into functional subsystems and larger quantum systems.

+ Conduct research on quantum information and quantum communication techniques, including squeezed light, quantum interference, and mode decomposition.

+ Investigate and develop novel methodologies for applied quantum techniques beyond traditional information-processing applications.

+ Design and execute rigorous experiments to characterize quantum photonics devices and components under varied environmental conditions such as temperature changes, vibration, and magnetic fields to ensure robustness and reliability.

+ Contribute to the establishment of a quantum information test bench, including the development of standardized calibration procedures and automated measurement systems.

+ Develop and test single-photon sources and integrate them into larger systems while optimizing overall system performance and maintaining quantum state integrity.

+ Analyze experimental data using appropriate programming tools and validate results through rigorous data verification processes.

+ Communicate research findings clearly to internal research teams using scientific writing, graphs, mathematical formulations, and technical presentations.

+ Collaborate effectively within cross-disciplinary research teams to deliver prototypes, generate intellectual property, and produce high-quality publications.

+ Demonstrate an active interest in publishing research outcomes in relevant scientific journals and conferences.

+ Participate in, support, and contribute to a strong workplace safety culture, following established safety protocols and engaging in safety-related activities.

Essential Skills

+ Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a closely related field.

+ Deep understanding of quantum systems, including entanglement, mode decomposition, nonlinear generation of quantum states, and spin physics.

+ Proficiency with optical systems, including laser systems, optical design, precision coupling, free-space alignment, and photon detection techniques.

+ Hands-on experience with instrumentation for chip-scale photonics testing, including precision fiber alignment, instrument coordination and synchronization, and rigorous data validation.

+ Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for data analysis, instrument control, and experimental automation.

+ Ability to present and document scientific results clearly using graphs, mathematical analysis, and structured scientific writing.

+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-disciplinary research teams and contribute to shared technical deliverables.

+ Commitment to maintaining and promoting workplace safety in laboratory and experimental environments.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Background in integrated photonics design and familiarity with Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation tools.

+

Experience with simulation platforms such as COMSOL and CST or comparable electromagnetic and photonics simulation tools.

+ Familiarity with high-speed electronics design, including PCB layout and optoelectronic packaging.

+

Experience with nanofabrication techniques such as electron-beam lithography and etching.

+ Active interest in publishing research results and contributing to the broader scientific community through conferences and journals.

Work Environment

This role operates in a research-focused laboratory environment centered on quantum and optical systems. You will work hands-on with laser systems, chip-scale photonics test setups, precision fiber alignment tools, and automated instrumentation for measurement and data collection. The position involves designing and running experiments that may require careful control of environmental conditions such as temperature, vibration, and magnetic fields to ensure robust device performance.

Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams is integral, with regular technical discussions, data reviews, and joint development of prototypes and test benches. The environment emphasizes rigorous scientific methods, high-quality documentation, and a strong culture of safety in all laboratory and experimental activities.
