Electrical Engineer - Power Generation

Job Summary

As an Electrical Power Engineer at HDR, you will support power generation design projects, leading multiple design and engineering tasks simultaneously. You will have experience in utility‑scale power and renewable energy, including power generation and distribution, renewable energy, protection, motor control design, power system studies, construction, equipment specification, and balance‑of‑plant such as raceway, lighting, and grounding systems. Interest in renewables and battery energy storage systems (BESS) is highly desirable.

You will also mentor junior engineers, develop client relationships, and support marketing activities such as proposal technical writing, fee builds, and development of work‑breakdown structures.

Provide design and engineering record work for power plant systems, support client engagements, conduct work sessions and project meetings, and participate in site reviews in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines. Manage construction contract administration, develop project schematic design, write project specifications, coordinate addenda, RFIs, change orders, job safety analysis, and integrate changes. Conduct QA/QC on the work of other engineers, project coordinators or designers and deliver project documentation.

• Protection and control design experience including settings calculations and electronic file development.
• Instrumentation and controls experience with DCS and PLC systems.
• Field experience, including startup and commissioning.
• Experience in renewable energy (PV, BESS, etc.) and DER or microgrid projects.
• Previous experience with an engineering power consulting firm.
• Willingness to grow into a team lead or section manager role.
• Knowledge and experience with three‑phase electrical power, protection and control design, system grounding, physical design, instrumentation and control and life safety systems.
• Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard power market sector design software (ETAP, SKM, Easy Power, CYMCAD, PSCAD, etc.).
• Conduct work sessions and project meetings, participate in reviews at the project site with the Project Manager and other disciplines, provide construction contract administration as needed.
• Develop project schematic design and contract document phase, reviewing project documents, writing project specification and coordinating areas of conflict.
• Coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with addenda, RFIs, change orders, JSAs and incorporate agreed‑upon changes.
• Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers.
• Active participation in employee‑owned culture.

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position (e.g., PE or P.Eng).
• Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard power market sector design software (PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Auto Pipe, Revit).
• Active participation in employee‑owned culture.
