The Michigan Municipal League (the League) is seeking an Assistant Finance Director to oversee and provide day-to-day management of assigned accounting functions, including our Liability & Property Pool, Worker's Compensation Fund, Unemployment Fund, and other non-insurance affiliate funds. This role works closely with the Finance Director to support organizational goals, ensure financial integrity, and drive continuous improvement across financial operations. The anticipated salary range for this position is $110,000 to $137,000, depending on qualifications.
Aboutthe Role
Join a high-performing, collaborative team where you will:
- Oversee and provide day-to-day management of the financial functions associated with the League's insurance programs and other assigned funds, ensuring
- Ensure strong internal controls, compliance, and financial integrity while continuously evaluating and improving processes and systems.
- Oversee and perform complex accounting functions for insurance programs and other assigned funds, including:
- Reinsurance accounting, financial statement disclosures, and regulatory reporting.
- Dividend calculations and fund allocations.
- Work papers, journal entries, and financial reporting for all assigned funds.
- General ledger activity, reconciliations, and account analysis.
- Lead all audit activities for the League's insurance programs and other assigned funds, including oversight of year-end close, work papers, SOC-1 reports, and other supporting schedules. Assigned audits will include:
- Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA)
- Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)
- Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS)
- Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with GASB and other applicable accounting standards.
- Prepare and present financial statements, narratives, reports, and analyses to internal leadership and external stakeholders.
- Perform financial analysis to identify and address trends and abnormalities.
- Leverage technology and other resources to improve efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of departmental operations.
- Lead the development, preparation, and administration of assigned budgets.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop assigned staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
To thrive in this role, a strong and diverse skill set is essential, including:
- A bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is required.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including advanced-level work. Additional professional or technical certifications (i.e. CPA) are preferred.
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Experience in insurance accounting strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, and FASB standards.
- Advanced proficiency in finance and accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make public presentations.
- Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work and collaborate effectively with individuals at all levels.
- Ability to effectively lead and direct the work of others.
- Ability to exercise excellent judgement with a strong work ethic, while maintaining a flexible mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with superior organizational skills and close attention to detail.
- Residency in Michigan or willingness to relocate is required to support the communities we serve.
