Construction Controller

Education Level: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)

Experience:

5+ years construction industry accounting experience

Location:

Ann Arbor, MI (in-person)

Position Type:
Full-time, On-site, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Minimal travel

Overview:
The McFate Group is seeking an experienced Controller to lead and elevate our financial operations. The McFate Group is an award winning and rapidly growing commercial and industrial design-build firm based in Ann Arbor, MI. We've been servicing customers throughout Michigan and the Midwest for over 20 years. Known for delivering innovative, high-quality spaces across multiple industries, our integrated approach blends creativity, functionality, and expert project management to bring our clients' visions to life.

As we continue to grow, we're looking for candidates that can be a team player with strong industry knowledge, communication skills, passion, enthusiasm, and the ability to get things done.

The Controller will oversee all accounting functions, financial reporting, and compliance for The McFate Group. This role is critical to ensure the financial health and integrity of our company as we manage complex, high-value construction projects and strategic planning.

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and WIP schedules
  • Experience with construction accounting software (e.g. Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work on-site in Ann Arbor and collaborate across departments

Responsibilities:

  • Managing all day-to-day accounting operations including A/R, A/P, payroll, job costing, and general ledger tasks
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports
  • Developing and monitoring budgets, forecasts, and cash flow analyses
  • Ensuring timely project billing and cost tracking in collaboration with project managers
  • Maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements
  • Implementing internal controls and driving continuous improvements in accounting processes
  • Coordinating year-end audits and tax filings with external CPA firm
  • Other duties may include insurance review, bonding oversight, and banking relations
