OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST POSITION PURPOSEAdministers occupational therapy hand rehabilitation treatments to patients and associated duties. Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent practice and application process. Demonstrates unit area designated competencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Evaluates and documents patients conditions and outlines treatment programs accordingly.
- Monitors and documents patients responses to treatment and makes recommendations to physicians.
- Interprets and executes medical orders.
- Administers all exercise and non-exercise treatment including both splint fabrication and application of physical modalities.
- Provides continuing education within the department to the non CHT therapists as well as aides and clerical staff as required regarding application of physical modalities and/or splinting techniques.
- Instructs patients and patients families as appropriate on home programs and care.
- Responsible for provision and documentation of all patient education.
- Assists with audits and departmental work.
- Documents patients evaluations, progress notes and discharge summaries in accordance with existing criteria.
- Participates in departmental CQI activities.
- Assists with various clerical tasks including scheduling and billing.
- Helps clean and maintain the department and its equipment.
- Must participate in continuing education activities.
- Must participate in student educational activities within the department.
- Education
:
Requires graduation from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy. - Experience
:
Two years of clinical experience, including 2000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy preferred. - Certification/Licensure
:
Occupational Therapist licensed in the State of Michigan. Must obtain a Certificate from the "Hand Therapy Certification Commission" upon being eligible and successfully maintain recertification from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. Must maintain Health Professional CPR certification.

Clinical focus is on hand and upper extremity diagnosis. Implements the evaluation and treatment of medically disabled patients using established procedures. Provides education to patients and family to deal with present disabilities or prevent further disabilities. Provides consultation to health care personnel and public in matters related to physical therapy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Evaluates patients' physical and functional status including muscular strength motor function, reflex and ambulation skills.
- Observes and interviews patients, reviews medical histories and administers detailed sensory tests, manual muscle tests, range of motion exams and other evaluation techniques.
- Establishes short- and long-term therapy goals and, based on evaluation, formulates treatment plans consistent with goals.
- Treats patients using recognized physical therapy procedures such as therapeutic exercise, gait training, functional training, application of modalities and assistive devices.
- Provides treatment and delegate treatment procedures to appropriate personnel.
- Observes patients' actions and reaction to treatment and evaluate progress.
- Consults with physicians and other health-care team members in adjusting treatment program as necessary.
- Determines appropriate devices such as wheelchairs, canes, crutches and prosthetic/orthotic devices necessary to assist patients in performing physical activities.
- Instruct patients in care and use of same.
- Regularly documents patient's progress to goals, and periodically prepares reports regarding same for physicians, other treatment members and supervisor's review.
- Participate in general physical therapy operations such as general patient education, quality review, clinical education, physical therapy program planning and clinics, and supervision of physical therapy student interns.
