The University of Michigan's Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office is seeking creative, innovative, and thoughtful candidates for the position of Assistant Director/Deputy ADA Coordinator, Disability Equity Office/ Compliance. Candidates for this position must have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience needed to provide highly responsive and effective support in a fast-paced leadership setting. Key skills include accuracy and attention to detail, the ability to problem-solve, consistent, effective and timely follow-through on all matters, ability to adhere to documentation guidelines with a high degree of accuracy using a complex database, excellent customer service and collaboration skills, and the ability to review, analyze, and process complaints based on disability harassment and discrimination.

The successful candidate must be adaptable, able to work under pressure to meet deadlines, and able to develop relationships across the university as needed to support a collaborative environment. The successful candidate will join a strong community of collaborators who value and support this work as we look to expand and evolve in critical ways.

This position provides oversight and quality assurance to ensure investigations and complaint resolutions are timely, impartial, and consistent with ADA, Sections 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and related civil rights laws. The Assistant Director supports the Director of Disability Equity/ADA Coordinator by reviewing processes, policies, and disability-related discrimination complaints, as well as investigative documents and reports, to maintain compliance with federal, state, and institutional standards.

The role includes supervising and guiding investigators, reviewing case plans and reports, advising staff and external partners on complex compliance matters, and escalating issues as appropriate.

Intake, Consultation and Resolution - Percentage 45%

  • Provide consultation and resolution of matters involving accessibility, disability discrimination and harassment as well as ADA code compliance issues.
  • Review and analyze complaints and grievances related to issues of disability, accessibility, and accommodations from students, employees, and/or the public; and identify appropriate resolution pathways including oversight of investigators who review and evaluate these complaints and grievances; and work to resolve issues as appropriate with various campus and university partners.
  • Provides detailed updates and reports with qualitative and/or quantitative analysis in support of the DEO's data reporting activities for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with HR, Facilities, ITS, Legal, and other units to ensure coordinated responses to complaints and investigations.

Policy Review and Modification 15%

  • Participate in development and modification of University policies, practices, and protocols to ensure continued ADA compliance, best practices, and disability accessibility and inclusion.
  • Provide support to the Director and ADA Coordinator to maintain compliance with all applicable policies as reflected by federal, state and local laws.

Education and Training
- Percentage 15%

  • Create and deliver training and workshops to mentor investigators and ECRT staff on investigative standards, documentation, and ADA-specific complaint procedures.
  • Develop and deliver compliance workshops for supervisors, faculty, and administrators on responding to and preventing disability-related complaints.
  • Design and deliver virtual and in-person training, education and resources materials on ADA compliance, disability and accessibility matters and disability inclusion.
  • Support outreach to increase awareness among campus stakeholders.

Strategic Planning - Percentage 15%

  • Support and assist the Director of Disability Equity in creation and execution of the DEO strategic plan focuses on compliance and disability inclusion across the University of Michigan.

Committee Work - Percentage 10%

  • Participation in committees and working groups across campus to provide insight on issues related to accessibility and disability matters.

Related Duties

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Juris Doctorate
  • In-depth knowledge of ADA Titles I-III, Sections 504/508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable federal and state disability laws.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience performing disability-related, Title VII, Civil Rights investigations, or providing ADA compliance, Title VII, Civil Rights law guidance, or employment law-related guidance and advice within a university, college, large, decentralized organization, government agency (OCR, EEOC, etc.), or employment or higher education law firm.
