Job Summary
Reports to:
Director of Data Science and Decision Support. Direct reports: N/A.
As a data scientist at the University of Michigan, you will generate insight from messy, real‑world data by writing understandable and reusable code for statistical analysis and data mining, and by developing interactive dashboards and web applications. A typical work week will include deep collaboration with the Marketing and Communications team, a large amount of programming and algorithm development, a fair amount of data management, analysis, and visualization, as well as some outreach, usability testing, and brainstorming.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Business Intelligence, Analytics, Finance, Information Management, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience with demonstrated competencies in information retrieval, computer science, data analysis, or related fields.
- Proficient in data munging and wrangling, including SQL and at least one additional data preparation language, capable of merging large datasets, cleaning messy records, recoding missing values, converting between data formats, and building standardized datasets for broader use.
- Ability to translate data into actionable insights, presenting findings in clear, cohesive narratives for both formal and informal settings, and translating complex data findings into non‑technical summaries that a wide variety of stakeholders can understand.
- Strong synthesis and storytelling skills using data.
- Curiosity, teamwork, and collaboration with technical and non‑technical peers to solve challenging questions.
- Experience developing interactive, reusable, and self‑service online analytics tools.
- Familiarity or interest in learning machine learning and data mining concepts and techniques.
- Comfort with the nuances of the higher education environment.
