The ORI Director of Data Strategy and Analytics provides strategic leadership for the research data and analytics enterprise of the Overdose Research Institute (ORI) within the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Anesthesiology and the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN). The position is responsible for advancing the University’s data infrastructure to support overdose, substance use disorder, pain, and related health services research through innovative data integration, advanced analytics, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Working closely with Medical School faculty, clinicians, researchers, analysts, and external partners, the Director leads the development of the Michigan Integrated Overdose Data Repository, oversees analytic operations and staff, and provides strategic consultation on research design, data acquisition, evaluation, and impact measurement. The position serves as a key resource for faculty seeking to leverage institutional and statewide data assets to generate preliminary evidence, strengthen grant competitiveness, evaluate implementation initiatives, and translate research into improvements in clinical care, public health, and policy.

As a senior member of the ORI leadership team, this position develops data strategy, establishes governance and analytic standards, supervises analytics personnel, cultivates strategic partnerships, and advances collaborative research initiatives that position the University of Michigan as a national leader in overdose, substance use disorder, and implementation science research.

This is a hybrid position, requiring 2 days per week on-site at the North Campus Research Complex in Ann Arbor.

Data Strategy & Research Infrastructure (30%)
  • Develop and execute the strategic vision, priorities, and roadmap for ORI’s research data and analytics portfolio in alignment with the Medical School, Department of Anesthesiology, and OPEN strategic goals.
  • Lead the development, governance, and expansion of the Michigan Integrated Overdose Data Repository by integrating clinical, public health, claims, and community-based data to support research, evaluation, quality improvement, and implementation science.
  • Establish data governance frameworks, policies, and processes that ensure responsible data stewardship, regulatory compliance, secure data sharing, and adherence to institutional and external data use requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to expand institutional data assets and improve faculty access to research data through sustainable, efficient data infrastructure.
  • Serve as the institutional resource for research data governance, regulatory compliance, and best practices related to data acquisition, linkage, analysis, and dissemination.
Research Analytics & Faculty Collaboration (25%)
  • Partner with faculty investigators, trainees, and research teams to develop study designs, analytic strategies, outcome measures, and data acquisition plans that strengthen research and grant competitiveness.
  • Lead the development of preliminary analyses, pilot data, and evaluation frameworks that support research, implementation initiatives, and future funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate the impact of clinical, implementation, population health, and policy initiatives through meaningful performance measurement and advanced analytics.
  • Develop reports, dashboards, visualizations, and other analytic products that effectively communicate findings to researchers, clinicians, health system leaders, policymakers, funders, and community partners.
  • Identify and implement innovative analytic methods, technologies, and data sources that advance research, evaluation, and scientific discovery.
