Job Summary

About the Ross IT Department
The Ross IT Department provides the Michigan Ross community with a comprehensive suite of technologies, web-based business solutions, and support to help our instructional, research, administrative, and service missions. Additionally, the admissions operations team supports the school's degree admissions processes and vendor relationships. Many core IT services are organized centrally.

Purpose
Reporting to the Chief Finance Officer and Chief Operation Officer, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is responsible for establishing strategies, long-range goals, plans, and policies relating to information technology. The CIO will oversee a team of approximately 40 professionals supporting operations in Ann Arbor and Los Angeles. The team is dedicated to developing and implementing best-in-class application and web development, support services, classroom and event services, admissions operations, and the technical infrastructure, which is largely cloud-based.

Responsibilities

40% Strategic Leadership

  • Establish IT strategy, long-range goals, plans, and policies that are aligned with and enable the school's strategy and mission.
  • Track and assess campus-wide technology efforts and initiatives and their implications, develop a school point of view on emerging topics, represent Ross in discussions, and partner with the campus on enterprise initiatives and committees.
  • Develop strategies to capitalize on trends and opportunities (policy, digital education, AI, etc.) and address external threats (regulatory, cybersecurity, etc.).
  • Communicate the benefits of technologies by developing information materials and presenting briefings to the community for the organization to make informed decisions and stay aligned around technology priorities.

30% IT Management

  • Facilitate and manage information technology solutions to meet departmental, school, and University needs.
  • Establish practices and plan staffing levels to ensure alignment between the School's IT strategy and daily operations.
  • Select, train, manage, evaluate, coach, and counsel staff and develop capabilities for the next generation of Information Technology.
  • Implement assessments to evaluate service and project outcomes.
  • Lead and direct action in emergency or business continuity situations.
  • Oversee the efficient use of operating and capital budgets, equipment life cycles, facilities, and vendors.
  • Participate in procurement and partnership negotiations to ensure service-level agreements align with the Ross academic calendar, budget cycle, and service expectations.
  • Assess and integrate new technologies to support research, the academic units, instruction, and daily operations.
  • Coordinate closely with key internal stakeholders to ensure organizational success (Digital Education, Kresge Library Services, and Faculty Support teams).
  • Gather information about how faculty and researchers teach, learn, and conduct research, so their future needs can be anticipated and matched with emerging technologies.

15% Partnerships

  • Build relationships with campus level leadership, and CIO equivalents in other units to enable optimal decision making related to (de) centralization of IT related services to ensure Ross can provide highly effective IT for our stakeholders
  • Collaborate and participate with campus-wide initiatives to enhance the School's advanced technology.
  • Partner with internal departments (Finance, Operations, etc.), corporations, other universities to work on related efforts.
  • Represent Ross on internal and external committees, task forces, and peer groups.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, or information science, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience leading information technology innovation and applied research and development in large complex organizations, including supervisory and performance management experience.
  • Experience in strategic planning that translates vision into an operational model.
  • Experience leading complex organizational change.
  • Experience using market data and trends to forecast needs and to generate and operationalize solutions and results.
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in quickly building credibility with a variety of stakeholders using effective communication and collaboration techniques.
  • Experience implementing successful methods from one user group to other fields
