Job Summary
The Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) is a clinical trials network funded by the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The Clinical Coordinating Center for SIREN resides within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. The SIREN Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our team.
This position serves as the high‑level bridge between the scientific faculty (PIs) and the administrative machinery of the CCC. This is a unique leadership opportunity within a nation‑wide research organization. The position reports to the Administrative Director and oversees administrative functions for a portfolio of clinical trials run out of the CCC. The person in this role will work closely with the SIREN Principal Investigators and the Administrative Director on all leadership functions;
work with the Finance Associate on monthly trial expenditures; oversee a subset of the SIREN trial awards and serve as back‑up for others; create and submit reports to sponsors; create and manage subcontracts; lead budget development for clinical trial proposals in the pipeline; and collaborate on submission of grant applications. The role will supervise three positions within the CCC and additional staff as needed.
SIREN
The SIREN network is a research infrastructure that conducts NIH‑funded clinical trials in the acute care setting at sites across the country. SIREN seeks to improve outcomes for patients with neurologic, cardiac, respiratory, hematologic, and trauma emergencies by identifying effective treatments administered in the earliest stages of prehospital, emergency department, and ICU care.
Responsibilities- Establish operational objectives and assignments and manage daily operations for a portfolio of trials.
- Provide leadership with suggestions for operational changes; contribute to the overall vision and strategy for the CCC.
- Help ensure the CCC meets measurable goals regarding operational effectiveness, customer service, and research attainment.
- Lead budget development for new research ideas and work functionally with collaborators to support clinical trial proposals in development.
- Exercise independent judgment to determine courses of action within the framework of SIREN policies and program objectives.
- Work under the guidance of the Network Investigators and Administrative Director with high professional standards.
- Directly supervise three positions within the CCC continually and additional staff as needed.
- Participate in interviewing, selecting, and onboarding new staff.
- Appraise employee productivity and efficiency; provide ongoing coaching and training.
- Request adjustments in effort and provide promotion recommendations.
- Manage complaints and grievances, execute disciplinary actions, and handle hires, terminations, or recommendations for status changes.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to study team members.
- Accountable for overseeing a portfolio of clinical trials, ensuring projects meet study start‑up tasks as scheduled.
- Establish operational objectives and assignments for trials overseen.
- Assign and delegate complex tasks, leveraging the diverse skill sets and knowledge levels within the trial teams.
- Ensure project milestones are met, within budget, and according to contract.
- Identify and manage risks, issue resolution, and critical thinking for project teams.
- Act as the primary point of contact internally for center faculty and the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) to facilitate timely communications internally, and externally with trial sponsors, the Data Coordinating Center (DCC), and clinical sites and contracts offices.
