Job Summary Purpose of Position

To manage the administrative and financial activities of a major academic, research and/or patient care unit with general authority to approve business transactions and administrative policies and procedures.

Organizational Relationships

Reports directly to the Michigan Medicine, Chief Nurse and Operations Executive. Direction is received from the Chief Nurse and Operations Executive. The Director of Finance and Business Operations works with the Chief Nursing Officers to formulate financial frameworks and administrative policies, as well as, educate and consult with Associate Chief Nursing Officers, Departmental Administrative Directors and Nursing Senior Directors, Clinical Nursing Directors and staff to effectively administer policies and procedures.

Collaborates with Michigan Medicine Senior Leadership, Segment Triads, Associate Chief Financial Officers, Clinical Nursing Directors, Departmental Directors, and Staff, Central Finance, Purchasing and clinical and hospital departments to address financial and facilities issues and other improvement opportunities.

Supervision is exercised over the Nursing Business Office.

Responsibilities*
  • Work with the Chief Nurse and Operations Executive to develop, manage and oversee the financial and business operations of the Nursing Services, Care, Respiratory Care and Social Work business units.
  • Manage and oversee the preparation of the operating budget for the units referenced above, and build team consensus regarding controls to operate within budgetary constraints.
  • Monitor business operations through review of periodic and special reports.
  • Manage the preparation of financial and administrative reports with full responsibility for policy interpretation and statistical analyses.
  • Oversee, in a coordinating and consultative capacity, the business and support services of Nursing Services and areas reporting to the Chief Nurse and Operations Executive.
  • Oversee and coordinate the preparation of major acquisition or program proposals for business units reporting to the Chief Nurse and Operations Executive.
  • Foster collaboration between Nursing Services, Care Management, Respiratory Care, and Social Work to identify and implement business process improvements to improve system-wide throughput and clinical care.
  • Participate with executive, administrative and/or clinical leadership in the planning and implementation of strategic initiatives, policy sessions, operations research/evaluations and/or other service activities that have institutional impact.
  • Coordinate the acquisition and allocation of capital equipment for Nursing Services, Care Management, Respiratory Care and Social Work with Segment Leadership.
  • Develop and implement administrative policies and procedures for Nursing Services.
  • Represent Chief Nurse and Operations Executive on institutional committees such as the Space Committee and Hospital Clinical Capital.
  • Prepare costing estimates and serve as a consultant during MNA labor negotiations.
  • Oversee the annual Internal Controls and space programs set out by the Institution.
  • Represent the business units detailed above to administrators and others with general authority to make commitments on administrative/financial policies and procedures.
  • Review and recommend staffing models for departments.
  • Recommend commodity budget allocation and expenditures.
  • Advise management regarding unit finances, reports and other business activities.
  • Collaborate with operational leadership for employee conflicts and grievances.
  • Effectively meet the institutional goals and objectives and meets all timelines for reporting.
