Summer 2026 Communications/Marketing Intern

The ITS Marketing and Communications team is looking for student interns to help us effectively and creatively communicate to the University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff. This work will involve various skills and disciplines, including, but not limited to: creating communication materials (writing and visuals), reviewing and editing content from a student perspective, taking on projects, working with our social media team, creating social content, writing for social platforms, creating articles and content for ITS websites and newsletters, crafting and editing content for ITS websites, supporting ITS Communications staff, helping us catalogue services and historical materials, working with our technical teams to communicate technical information, and more.

There is room for specialization in areas like writing, social media content creation, and graphic/video work.

Candidates who also have experience with writing, content creation, graphic design, video editing, and social media are strongly desired. However, we are open to amazing candidates with other comparable skills. Writing and project management are two of the most sought-after skills for these positions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong writing skills, including knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Strong sense of responsibility with great follow-through on commitments
  • Some relevant work experience in a related field or with related responsibilities
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral
  • Flexible and cooperative, with the ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to take direction and constructive feedback
  • Ability to work on several projects at once - and being flexible as deadlines and priorities change
  • Willingness to participate in limited campus events - like helping us take photos/create content on the UM-Ann Arbor campus, appearing in short social content, or helping with summer events (only during previously agreed upon times when interns will be on campus)
  • Willingness to participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas to the larger group
  • Writing samples (including content for social media and longer-form articles) are encouraged, if available
  • Familiarity with Google tools (Docs, Sheets, Drive) and social media platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram, Linked In, Slack)
  • Ability to follow-up pro-actively - ask questions and provide updates via email, Slack, and other channels without always being prompted
  • Experience with graphic design and video editing a major plus (but not required)
  • For candidates with more graphic/video experience - familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, including Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop is a plus
  • Be a currently enrolled student at a U.S. college, university, or certificate‑granting program for the duration of the program.
    • If you are a non-UM Ann Arbor international student, you are required to apply for CPT or OPT in your respective campuses.
    • If you are a current UM Ann Arbor international student, you do not need to apply for CPT.
  • Have authorization and availability to work 40 hours per week for the entire duration of the Internship Program
  • Be able to commute to Ann Arbor, Michigan, at least two times per week to work at an on‑campus location

Day‑to‑Day Work: You'll support the Marketing/Communications team with core responsibilities listed above, gaining real‑world experience in documentation, process analysis, and systems thinking.
