The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a Michigan Veteran's Affairs Agency (MVAA) Gold Level Veteran Friendly Employer. MDOC employs nearly 1,500 veterans and active military members. The Department offers many benefits and supports our veteran employees, spouses, and families.
This is a non‑career classification with a maximum of 1,040 hours per calendar year. The role is for an experienced registered nurse who works in a correctional facility providing nursing services to convicted felons.
ResponsibilitiesThe RN performs the full range of nursing assignments in a full functioning capacity. Nursing practice guidelines are available but require adaptation or interpretation to determine the appropriate course of action based on each individual situation.
EducationPossession of a diploma, associate's, bachelor's, or master's degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.
ExperienceNo specific type or amount of experience is required.
Possession of a Michigan license in good standing as a registered nurse.

Ethical Standards and ConductEmployment in the state classified service demands a high degree of loyalty and imposes high ethical standards on employees to ensure the integrity of state government and maintain effective services. All employees must meet these ethical standards and all appointing authorities are obligated to enforce these ethical standards. Employees must report any possible conflict of interest.
Background ScreeningApplicants convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017 will be screened out. Applicants convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
TrainingNew hires and returning employees after more than two years will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET), either 40 or 80 hours of in‑person training based on offender contact and job classification. All new employees will also complete additional online training to successfully complete their non‑custody new employee training.
