Director Surgical Services

Registered Nurses with Director, Unit Management or other leadership experience have an opportunity to lead an expanding Surgical Services department at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Livingston, and Canton.

Position Purpose

The Director Surgical Services directs the organizational management resources and financial resources for the internal and external customers of physicians, patients and staff across the Trinity Health Ann Arbor's surgical services cluster including operating rooms, pre‑op, recovery, pain clinics, CSR, endoscopy and liaison to the trauma team. Build internal systems that support those that deliver patient care. Develops and maintains collaborative medical and administrative staff relationships that support and allow the areas to meet the system goals and objectives.

Determines and sets direction for future goals for assigned areas, in conjunction with administration and medical staff leadership. Builds, coaches and facilitates the leadership team development of the surgical services cluster, to meet customer service requirements for high quality, cost effective care. Develops a safe and positive environment for internal and external customers to deliver and receive high quality, cost effective care.

We have remarkable operating room teams at Trinity Health in SE Michigan. Our board‑certified surgeons and anesthesiologists are supported by exceptional surgical residents‑in‑training and highly skilled nurses, physician assistants, and technicians. Each of our teams delivers excellent care for all types of surgery with a surgical volume of over 24,000 cases each year. Our inpatient and outpatient surgical suites are equipped with the most advanced surgical and patient monitoring technology.

The selected candidate will oversee the daily operations of 39 operating rooms and 5 pre‑op and recovery rooms, including the Ann Arbor Main OR (19 rooms); the Ann Arbor OSC (9 rooms). Ann Arbor is a Level 1 Trauma Center and is a leader in Robotic Surgery. Additionally, they will lead surgical services at Trinity Health Livingston, Trinity Health Canton, Perfusion, Sterile Processing and administrative staff.

Required

Education / Licensure
  • BSN is required. A Master’s degree in Business, Nursing or other relevant discipline also required.
  • Current license to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse is required.
  • Five or more years of relevant nursing management or supervisory background.
  • Demonstrable experience with financials, clinical throughput, and process improvement.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with system administration and medical staff in assessing community needs, program planning and strategic planning activities that impact the delivery of patient care services for the surgery cluster.
  • Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and evaluate the systems and resources to support 24‑hour patient care delivery. Facilitate leadership staffing plans to provide quality care during all hours of operation, meeting age‑specific development, cultural, spiritual and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Monitor and communicate surgery cluster fiscal and volume targets to administration, cluster leadership and physician leadership. Develop and implement strategies to meet targets and improve variances.
  • Forecast and analyze operational and capital budget. Prioritize and purchase new capital equipment based on the strategic plan. Review cost per case data to determine appropriate cost savings.
  • Provide leadership mentorship, coaching and guidance to all staff in the surgery cluster to achieve department goals and objectives.
  • Develop, communicate and evaluate patient care standards that meet or exceed regulatory, legal, professional and quality standards. Work collaboratively with the VP of Surgical Services to meet these standards.
  • Negotiate and review contracts for new technology and implants in conjunction with supply‑chain staff for the surgery cluster. Participate in corporate product initiatives as requested.
