Responsibilities- Assist the Clinical Nursing Director on 4B1, 32-bed, Adult Medical-Surgical Unit in the planning and management of 4B1 patient care services.
- To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research
- To assist in coordinating patient care services consistent with the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers mission and goals.
- Collaborate/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
- Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff, as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Plan, assign, and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
- Participate in interviewing, selecting, and orienting nursing and support staff.
- Participate in counseling, coaching, discipline and evaluation of staff.
- Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of the individual performance plans.
- Facilitate open channels of communication with Nursing Directors, ACNO's, peers, staff, providers and others.
- Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, members of the Nursing Leadership Team and others.
- Rotate to the off shifts as determined by staffing needs and the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Maintain significant presence rounding on patients, families and interfacing with staff to ensure patient care excellence on all shifts.
- To provide clinical assessment. Mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff.
- Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
- Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
- Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
- Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
- Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
- Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
- Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.
- Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
- Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care.
- Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Specialist and/or Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement organization, department and/or unit policies, procedures and standards of Nursing Care.
- Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinator to implement competency-based evaluation.
- Collaborate with intra- and inter- disciplinary, and intra- and inter departmental colleagues to create the Ideal Patient Experience.
- Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
- Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
- Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice of the unit's nursing staff.
- Promote staff involvement in clinical research.
Required
Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
- Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in General Adult Medical-Surgical
- Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nurse leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nurse leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
- Demonstrated leadership ability including experience in, charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.
