Summary

The LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center is seeking a Full‑Time Licensed Practical Nurse for the Cardiology Clinic. This LPN is aligned under Chief of Staff Services.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when recruiting qualified citizens is not possible under VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a practical or vocational nursing school approved by an appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time of graduation.
  • Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the NLNAC.
  • Additional information may also be obtained from the NLNAC website.
  • Exceptions include health‑care education or training in the military accepted by the licensing body of the jurisdiction that licenses the applicant.
  • Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school may qualify.

  • May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable only to current VHA employees who meet the criteria).
  • Full active current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
  • LPN/LVN who has had any license revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or placed in probation may be appointed only per Chapter 3, Section B, paragraph 16 of this part.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Spoken and written English proficiency is required.

Grade Determinations:

  • GS‑3:
    None beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS‑4:
    Employees may be appointed or advanced to GS‑4 if they meet any of the following criteria:
  • Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN.
  • Graduation from an approved school (waivable as per Section C) and one year of experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical‑nursing‑or patient‑care facility.
  • Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
  • GS‑5:
    Completion of 1 year of qualifying experience at GS‑4 level or equivalent and demonstrated ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of conditions; collaboration with RNs and/or MD/DOs; patient and family education; documentation of medication administration; emergency response; reporting equipment or supply deficiencies; supervision by an RN or MD/DO.
  • GS‑6:
    Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at GS‑5 level or equivalent; technical proficiency in patient care; judgment in choosing procedures; accurate reporting; emergency intervention; understanding of patient behavior; supportive relationships; knowledge of diagnostic support duties; commitment to continuing education.

Responsibilities
  • The LPN is aligned under Medicine Services and may be assigned to Cardiology Clinic and additional clinic areas as required.
  • Perform clinical roles within the scope of practice, including medication administration, minor non‑surgical treatments, and patient education.
  • Use judgment in selecting appropriate sequences of procedures and accurately record patient information.
  • Submit work for general review by an RN or MD/DO for compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Actively assess and respond to patient needs, including medication and equipment assistance.
  • Maintain respect for patient and family privacy and dignity.
  • Incorporate customer‑service standards in all interactions.
  • Support diagnostic tests and procedures by preparing patients, handling equipment, and monitoring conditions.
  • Participate in orientation, education, and training of less experienced LPNs, nursing assistants, or health technicians.
  • Attend to emergency situations by promptly seeking RN or MD/DO assistance and initiating appropriate interventions.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or supply deficiencies.
