Position Overview

This position will rotate between Adult Inpatient Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMT/CT) and the Outpatient Migration Program and is responsible for the direct management of adult patients with malignant myeloid and lymphoid hematological disorders.

Responsibilities
  • Provide care and direct management of adult patients with focus on BMT/CT under a collaborative agreement with BMT physicians and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform history/physical examination and patient evaluation 1-2×/day, orders per Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) in supportive care treatment regimens, admissions, discharges, consults, patient and family education, collaboration and referrals with other health care providers, and education to nursing staff, students, and the community.
  • Recognize and treat sepsis, chemotherapy toxicities, graft versus host disease, cytokine release syndrome, immune effector cell–associated enterocolitis, neurotoxicity syndrome, cardiac myopathies, arrhythmias, and profound cytopenias requiring daily transfusions.
  • Perform procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy, bone marrow harvest as second assist, lumbar puncture, and skin biopsies for diagnostic and therapeutic indications.
  • Review laboratory and radiographic test results and interface with faculty and patients regarding results and plan of care.
  • Participate in clinical trial research by assessing patients, consenting for clinical trial participation, and participating in trials.
  • Facilitate transition of care and function as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient settings and between staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in workshops and CME activities pertinent to BMT and attend programmatic meetings, regional or national meetings as required.
Qualified Candidates

NP:

  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult‑Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a FNP, AGPCNP, or ANP with 4 years’ experience as an inpatient BMT APP in a similar clinical environment within the past 6 years.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Approved Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • 1‑2 years expertise in managing acutely ill patients including telemetry, EKG interpretation, and ACLS at the Advanced Practice level.
  • BMT APP experience required; candidates with Heme‑Onc or Hospitalist experience will be considered.

PA:

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC‑PA or predecessor agency.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required.
  • Current DEA registration required.
