Advanced Practice Professional (PA) Adult BMT Oncology Treatment and Evaluation Center (OTEC)

This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening.

A total of two (2), 1.0 FTE Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Responsibilities*
  • Oncology Treatment and Evaluation center (OTEC) is a cancer after hours unit designed to provide 24/7 oncologic after hours access for cancer patients and particularly cell and gene therapy patients. It functions to triage acute issues, minimize hospital admissions and emergency room visits.
  • APPs will perform outpatient visits, pre-chemotherapy and infusion visits, initial stem cell transplant and CAR-T infusion monitoring, same day post-infusion follow-up, evaluation of complications and facilitate admissions related to toxicities in Inpatient/Outpatient (IPOP).This position will provide care in the OTEC unit associated with the Adult Inpatient Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMT/CT) program and the IPOP Program.
  • Manage complex patients including performing history/ physical examination, patient evaluation and orders per Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) in supportive care treatment regimens, admission of patients, discharges, consults, patient and family education, collaboration and referrals with other health care providers, and provision of education to nursing staff, students, and the community.
  • Ability to recognize and appropriately treat: sepsis, chemotherapy toxicities; graft versus host disease (GVHD), cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated enterocolitis (IEC-EC), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), cardiac myopathies with arrhythmias, and profound cytopenias requiring daily transfusions.
  • Perform procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy, bone marrow harvest as 2nd assist, lumbar puncture, and skin biopsies for diagnostic and therapeutic indications.
  • Review laboratory and radiographic tests results and interface with faculty and patients regarding results and plan of care.
  • Participate in clinical trial research through clinically assessing patients and consenting of patients for clinical trial participation as well as participating in clinical trials.
  • Facilitate transition of care and function as a liaison between the inpatient and outpatient settings and between staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in workshops and CME activities pertinent to BMT. Attendance at programmatic meetings at Michigan Medicine and occasionally attend regional or national meetings.
  • Provide care and direct management of adult patients with cancer and particularly malignant myeloid and lymphoid hematological disorders with a focus on BMT/CT
Required Qualifications *

NP:

  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a FNP, AGPCNP, or ANP with 4 years experience as an inpatient BMT APP in the similar clinical environment with the same acuity and patient population within the past 6 years.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA Approved BLS
  • AHA Approved ACLS
  • 2 years expertise in the management of acutely ill patients including Telemetry, EKG interpretation and Acute Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the Advanced Practice level.
