This seasonal position is responsible for the upkeep and day to day maintenance of over 70 playgrounds surfaces (not equipment) from May through October. This position is required to drive to parks throughout the City on a daily basis and transport tools and work day equipment. Weeding, spreading woodchips, leading volunteer workdays related to playgrounds, park landscape, removal of invasive plants or other park beautification efforts including litter pick up.
Develops and maintains landscaping and gardens on city parks. Manually remove invasive plant species, cut brush back, mulch, weed, and maintain landscaped areas. This position reports to the GIVE 365 volunteer and outreach program supervisors and provides support to the Adopt-a-Park program. This position also works closely with field operations staff in support of park maintenance efforts. When volunteer groups are available, this position will assist in selection of volunteer projects and lead volunteers in maintenance projects.
Work is performed in accordance with established rules and regulations and written or verbal instruction from a supervisor. Operates hand and power tools and equipment. Picks up debris, leaves, removed brush and other compostable materials, spread woodchips. Repairs and paints shelters and signs; performs minor maintenance and service work on mechanical equipment. Maintains, organizes, and provides regular inventory of tools, supplies and safety equipment.
Ideal candidate enjoys working outside and can work independently-- but also enjoys working with others; someone who takes pride and sees value in providing clean and maintained park spaces for the public. Comfortable to help lead volunteers and instruct others on landscape/weeding/painting skills and strategies. This position offers 40 hours of work a week with a schedule that includes independent, labor intensive tasks like weeding as well as time spent prepping and leading volunteer work days.
Schedule can be flexible and planned one month in advance but will include weekend hours and occasional evening hours.
Starting Hourly Rate: $19.15
Required Qualifications- Minimum of 18 years of age.
- The incumbent must have the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as he/she may be required to drive a vehicle for local travel.
- Must have a valid drivers’ license or medical card upon hire.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse climatic conditions including hot and cold.
- Landscaping knowledge operating equipment as required in grounds keeping, semiskilled building maintenance work; or any equivalent combination for education and experience.
- Knowledge of common practices, procedures, materials and equipment used in maintaining landscaping and gardens.
- Invasive plant knowledge, familiar with native plants, ability to identify plants, experience maintaining landscaped areas.
- Knowledge of Integrative Pest Management strategies.

The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. including loading, unloading and moving bags of mulch and soil. Occasional unloading and loading of awkward and heavy objects in and out of the truck bed (trees, wheelbarrows, large plants).
