NIAAA T-32 Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowship – University of Michigan Addiction Center

The University of Michigan Addiction Center is seeking PhD and MD applicants for its National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)-funded T32 Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowship.

Housed within the Department of Psychiatry, the U-M Addiction Center offers a strong methodological infrastructure and a highly collaborative research environment. Our core emphasis is focused on alcohol, while adapting to address the changing landscape of other drug use, particularly poly-substance use as well as scientific advances in areas such as neuroscience, digital technology, adaptive intervention designs, and computational psychiatry. We focus holistically on understanding risk and protective factors across the social-ecology, with community-engaged partnerships with individuals with lived experience to enhance relevance and impact, including a focus on comorbid health conditions (e.g., sleep, pain, mental health, suicide, violence).

Trainees benefit from mentorship across multiple departments and schools—including Psychiatry, Psychology, Public Health, Cognitive Science, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Social Work, and Nursing — as well as collaborations with the Institute for Social Research, the Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation, the Michigan Innovations in Addiction Care through Research & Education (MI-ACRE) program, and the Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision Making Center (d3c), providing exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary research and career development.

The NIAAA T32 Fellowship prepares the next generation of independent addiction scientists by providing multidisciplinary training to:

• Develop and test innovative approaches to prevention, intervention, and treatment
• Design and evaluate strategies to implement and disseminate evidence-based practices across broad populations
• Advance understanding of the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that influence alcohol and other drug use
• Build successful independent research programs through intensive mentorship, grant writing, and career development

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a PhD or MD.
• Appointments are typically two years, with the possibility of a third year.
• Salaries are based on prior postdoctoral experience and NRSA guidelines.
