This position is charged with providing leadership and supervision of the public safety department. It creates a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The officer works to educate the campus community regarding safety and security, minimize risk for the college, enforce all college policies and procedures, and enforce the laws of the State of Michigan. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the college mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.
This position serves as a first‑line supervisor and reports directly to the Deputy Chief Campus Public Safety.
- Perform duties of a first line supervisor.
- Provide supervision and leadership over personnel both sworn and non‑sworn for the campus public safety department.
- Act as a liaison and establish professional relationships with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
- Supervise all department investigations and act as the lead investigator as needed on assigned cases.
- Create a good working environment for the department personnel.
- Be the department’s first point of contact with the Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office.
- Attend area‑wide detective bureau meetings and build relationships with area departments to ensure coordination of resources and sharing of information as needed.
- Be available for call‑back in the event there is an immediate need for police investigative service.
- Establish a culture on campus where the public safety department is part of the community and works closely with community members to provide for the safety and security of students, staff, faculty and visitors.
- Provide campus patrols through foot patrol and motor vehicle operation (where applicable).
- Perform escorts for students and employees to their cars and/or from building to building.
- Provide security for dignitaries and other visitors to the College.
- Investigate and file remedial reports of security and safety concerns involving building structures, yards and parking lots on campus.
- Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as card access systems, CCTV, key control and radio communications as assigned.
- Perform defensive tactics and provide medical services such as first aid, CPR and AED as needed and as trained.
- Enforce college rules and regulations on campus, which includes conducting investigations and completing/filing necessary documentation.
- Maintain building security by locking and unlocking College buildings and disarming and arming security alarms according to scheduled times.
- Coordinate with non‑sworn public safety staff.
- Regulate and monitor parking conditions; assist students and employees that are locked out of their vehicles/classrooms and assist with jump‑starts.
- Report fire and safety hazards on campus.
- Provide lost and found property services.
- Develop a basic understanding of the operation of building mechanical systems to facilitate communication and problem reporting to Facilities department, write up and route repair requisitions as needed.
- Provide excellent customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of customers.
- Demonstrate and promote college values.
- Demonstrate broad knowledge of college policies and procedures including specialized knowledge of faculty, staff, and student issues.
- Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
