Who We Are
The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment.
Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.
The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) invites applications for Police Officers assigned to our Protective Services Department.
Protective Services is a specialized, plainclothes assignment that encompasses executive protection, risk assessment, and the protection of high-value assets.
You will report to the Police Sergeant of Protective Services and provide support across all aspects of departmental operations. Flexibility in scheduling, including different hours and days, is required to meet community needs and departmental demands.
This position is designated as a long-term special assignment position described in the Special Assignments and Positions Memorandum of Understanding. This position is also designated as having a "Variable work schedule", as described in the POAM UMLEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Pay Range Information- The pay range for new external hires is $64,833.60 to $93,080.00 per year, based on education and experience.
- The full pay range for current DPSS Police Officers is $64,833.60 to $ per year, based on education and experience.
This salary information is based on the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Police Officers Association of Michigan, effective as of December 21st, 2025.
Responsibilities*- Provide executive protection for the University and visiting dignitaries
- Travel as necessary, including out-of-state or internationally, as a part of a protective detail or advance team
- Must be able to work flexible hours according to the needs of the community and assigned duties
- Transport personnel to and from on- and off-campus locations
- Provide security for special events, on and off campus, for varying duration's of time
- Assist with the development of operational plans for executive protection details
- Assist with investigations related to executive protection, working in collaboration with the UMPD Criminal Investigations Unit and other external law enforcement agencies
- Attend regular meetings and communicate with stakeholders, including, but not limited to the Athletic Department, U-M President's Office, University Development, and Government Relations representatives
- Perform support tasks of an independent and confidential nature relating to executive protection
- May provide support and technical assistance to other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, security agencies, and peer partners as needed for strategic intelligence and special events
- Perform necessary research to aid the completion of various reports, including strategic intelligence reports and other investigations as assigned
- Monitor and review security camera footage to support investigations and aid protective services
- Effectively support our mission and goals and prioritize tasks and deadlines
- Demonstrated leadership and creative problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
- Other duties as assigned, such as providing executive protection for the University and visiting dignitaries
Education and Experience:
- High school or GED equivalent + 5 years of relevant police/law enforcement experience, + 2 years of full-time executive protection experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training, + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)
OR
- Associate degree + 4 years of relevant police/law enforcement experience, + 2 years of full-time executive protection experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training, + MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)
- Proven ability to work independently and multitask
- History of working effectively as part of a team and independently
- Considerable knowledge of state and federal law
- Proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies and diverse audiences
- Maintain compliance with DPSS appearance and grooming standards
- History of customer focus, teamwork, and creativity while working in a deadline-driven environment
- Demonstrated expertise in protective security operations and advanced investigative techniques is desirable
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong commitment to working with students, staff, faculty, and members of other departments across the University
