Field Service Engineer - Servo-Hydraulic Testing Systems
Job Description
This Field Service Engineer role focuses on installing, maintaining, and repairing advanced servo-hydraulic testing systems for customers across the Midwest. Based in Michigan, the position combines hands-on electro-mechanical troubleshooting with both on-site and remote customer support. You will work closely with a global technical team to diagnose complex issues, perform system upgrades, and ensure that highly specialized testing equipment operates at peak performance.
The role offers a mix of field travel, time in the local office, hybrid work when not at customer sites, and exposure to international teams and training opportunities.
Responsibilities
+ Install servo-hydraulic testing equipment at customer facilities, ensuring proper setup, calibration, and handover to the customer.
+ Perform preventative maintenance on servo-hydraulic systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
+ Diagnose and repair issues across hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, PLC, and software systems on complex testing equipment.
+ Interpret technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams to support efficient troubleshooting and repairs.
+ Provide timely on-site technical support at customer locations throughout the Midwest, with a focus on automotive customers in Southeast Michigan.
+ Deliver remote technical support to customers, including phone and online assistance for diagnostics and issue resolution.
+ Coordinate with global engineering and support teams to resolve complex technical inquiries and deliver effective solutions.
+ Support customers with system upgrades, including planning, installing, testing, and verifying upgraded components or software.
+ Assist customers in identifying appropriate spare parts and provide informed service and maintenance recommendations.
+ Maintain accurate and detailed service reports and documentation following each field visit or remote support engagement.
+ Communicate professionally with customers, providing clear explanations of issues, repairs, and recommended next steps.
+ Collaborate with international colleagues during installations and complex projects, including working alongside overseas crews.
+ Contribute to a strong team culture by sharing knowledge, supporting peers, and participating in continuous improvement efforts.
+ Develop skills and experience to progress into lead roles for field service and installation projects over time.
Essential Skills
+ At least 2 years of experience in a role requiring mechanical aptitude and hands-on work with various tools.
+ Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, including the ability to work with complex machinery and mechanical assemblies.
+ Basic to intermediate electrical skills, with the ability to work safely on electro-mechanical systems.
+
Experience with field service activities such as installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of equipment.
+ Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues involving hydraulics, mechanical components, electrical systems, and electronics.
+ Strong customer interface skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers during service visits.
+ Experience reading and interpreting technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams.
+ Capability to work independently in the field, including at times being the sole representative on a customer site.
+ Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% of the time, primarily within the Midwest.
+ Organizational skills to maintain accurate service reports and documentation after field and remote support activities.

Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience working with electronics and electro-mechanical systems is a significant plus.
+ Prior experience in a customer-facing technical support or service role is highly beneficial.
+ Comfort working with PLCs and software-based control systems is advantageous.
+ Interest in developing into a field service lead or installation lead role over time.
+ Openness to international collaboration and training, including potential multi-week training abroad.
+ Ability to contribute positively to a team-oriented culture and collaborate with both local and global colleagues.
Work Environment
This role is based in Michigan and involves approximately 50% travel, with the majority of customers located in Southeast Michigan, allowing most nights to be spent
-of-state travel occurs for an estimated 5-6 weeks per year. When not on customer sites, you will work in a small, close-knit office team located in a downtown setting, with hybrid work flexibility depending on workload. The field environment includes customer manufacturing and testing facilities, where you will sometimes work independently and other times alongside a team, including international crews during installations.
