Mobile Equipment Servicer

Summary

The employee will serve as a Mobile Equipment Servicer for the Facilities Management Service at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI, under the supervision of the Grounds and Transportation Supervisor. The position’s primary duties involve servicing automotive and mobile equipment.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  Experience:
  
  servicing automotive and mobile equipment such as automobiles, trucks, buses, forklifts, skid steers, RTV’s, and backhoes.
• Duty specific tasks including dispensing fuel, checking fluid levels and tire pressures, inflating tires, washing equipment, changing lubricants, installing accessory items, and changing and repairing tires.
• Possessing a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brakes.

Physical Effort:
The work requires good coordination and manual dexterity. The employee is required to bend, stoop, crawl, walk, climb, and lift heavy objects up to fifty pounds. The employee frequently works on top of equipment at heights up to eighteen feet above the ground and underneath vehicles, often in awkward positions such as in lube pits or under car racks.

Working Conditions:

The work is performed inside or outside of the facility, exposing the employee to all kinds of weather conditions. The employee is exposed to a dirty, oily, and greasy work environment and may handle cans and drums of petroleum products or industrial cleaners. The employee will use authorized safety equipment when dealing with potential hazards such as carbon monoxide, scalds, electrical shock, gas, propane, or chemical fumes.

The employee is subject to cuts, bruises, and burns.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, job element evaluation is used: equipment assembly, installation, repair; interpret instructions and specifications; technical practices; troubleshooting; use and maintain tools and equipment. The employee must meet or exceed the prescribed screen‑out element (WG‑2 and higher only).

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35‑40 hours per week.

• Performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment.
• Repairs tubes and tubeless tires with plugger or hot or cold patch of all sizes.
• Dispenses gasoline, checks fluid levels and tire pressures, inflates tires, washes cars, lubricates vehicles, installs simple accessory items, and changes and repairs tires and tubes.
• Installs alcohol in air systems, drains moisture from air tanks, changes oil and filters on hydraulic systems.
• Refers any observed need for major repairs to an automotive mechanic or other appropriate worker.
• Plans and accomplishes a variety of complex work assignments.
• Adjusts work operations and schedules to meet emergencies or changing programs.
• Reports safety hazards to supervisor promptly – correcting them where possible.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
