Position: Field Service Technician 3 - Compact Construction Equipment

Description

The Field Service Technician III provides face‑to‑face customer service located at an off‑site location. The role is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and reconditioning various light and heavy construction equipment. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and be able to pass a DOT physical.

Essential Functions
  • Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies; comply with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform basic to intermediate repairs and minimal troubleshooting off‑site with minimal supervision.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components to CAT specifications.
  • Test, adjust, and verify proper operation of all repairs and adjustments.
  • Prepare and complete all job‑related documents, write service reports, order parts, and maintain clear customer records; access databases required to complete jobs.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles with the necessary licenses and certificates.
  • Maintain service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections and driver logs as required by the Department of Transportation.
  • Adhere to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations.
  • Maintain all company equipment, tools, and vehicles in a clean, working order.
  • Communicate job progress to supervisor and customer as needed.
  • Complete assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat‑rate time and re‑work standards.
  • Work overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs.
  • Complete all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training in a timely manner.
  • Project professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance; may act as a mentor to lower‑level technicians.
  • Require regular and punctual employee attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • At least 3 years of field or shop service tech troubleshooting and repair experience with compact construction equipment such as skid steers and mini excavators.
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Intermediate knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, undercarriage, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems (CAT ET & CAT SIS 2.0).
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Intermediate diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Planning and organizing skills to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; plan for additional resources.
  • Operation and control skills of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills to determine the required tools for a job.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate a crane and forklift, and obtain required certifications/licenses.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under fast‑paced, time‑constraining circumstances.
  • Skill in operating hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
Requirements
  • More than three years of heavy equipment experience required; five or more years preferred.
  • MSHA certification preferred.
  • Air conditioning certification preferred.
  • Crane/Rigger certifications preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record for the past 3 years.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and maintain a DOT medical card.
  • Must own required tools to perform repairs.
Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Travel

Travel required with a possibility of an overnight stay.

Physical Requirements
  • Move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently move materials or equipment weighing up to 80 lb.
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
