Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

Responsibilities
  • Assist all students, individually or in small groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans to ensure they are college, career and life ready.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified needs or prevention-oriented activities.
  • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students.
  • Provide services through the School Counseling Core Curriculum, Individual Student Planning (6 Year Plan) and preventive and responsive services while maintaining program management, system support and accountability.
  • Develop, manage, and communicate the comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model, COMAR and current individual school data (School Progress Plan) with the school administrator and other stakeholders.
  • Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
  • Monitor student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assist with appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning.
  • Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data; assist teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data, and prepare and present reports.
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process.
  • Maintain current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders.
  • Conduct a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and analyze data to guide program direction and emphasis.
  • Measure results of the school counseling program activities including the Closing the Gap Action Plans and share results as appropriate.
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in school counseling.
  • Possession of a Maryland Educator Professional Certificate with School Counselor endorsement.
  • OR education, training, and experience as required by the Maryland Pathway to Initial Licensure for School Counselor.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator Professional License and School Counselor Licensure.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of school counseling, curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment, the ASCA National Model, and data analysis.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and human relations skills.
Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

Conditions of Employment

Requires attendance at after-school and evening meetings and events.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $64,125 - $120,717 (Valid Until 12/31/2025); $65,468 - $120,717 (Effective 01/01/2026).

Other compensation:
Position may be eligible for relocation bonus, extra duty activities pay, or other student activities pay as defined in the applicable Bargaining Unit Agreement.
