Job Description

Title: Temporary Support Assistant (TSA)

Job Summary: Under the direction of a supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at Preschool/PreK, elementary, and secondary grade levels. The TSA supervises students during the school day both in the building and on work sites, carrying out instructional tasks, supporting self‑care, and collecting data as outlined by professional staff based on individual student objectives.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Supervise students throughout the school day in the building and worksite/community environment, including assisting on/off bus, lifting and pushing students, and monitoring entry/exit to ensure correct destinations.
  • Assist students with proper social behavior, personal hygiene, and self‑help skills such as toileting, feeding, and grooming, as assigned during the school day and/or at off‑site locations.
  • Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implement instructional plans and activities as designated by the job coach or teacher. Provide reinforcement techniques to keep students focused and on task.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in the classroom, lunch areas, playground, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Observe and gather data regarding student performance on instructional and behavioral goals, and provide data collection to the supervising teacher.
  • Support students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns, including the implementation of behavior strategies and supports.
  • Follow AACPS policies & procedures while assisting students and staff in the building, off‑site work training activities, and community‑based settings.
  • Participate in professional development; attend workshops and in‑service training for specialized related care needs, seizures, disruptive behavior, etc., as provided by the Board of Education.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Formal academic courses/training in child development with specific applications to special education preferred.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Ability to exercise considerable patience and work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Punctual, regular, and predictable attendance essential.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to diverse learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Hold or be eligible for a Driver's License (Class

    C) issued by Maryland or state of legal residence. Daily access to reliable transportation required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Active driver’s license (Class

    C) and reliable transportation.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving required to conduct Board business within the scope of employment.
  • Personal vehicle required.
Physical Demands
  • Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving as required, with most duties performed between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds as required.
Travel Requirements
  • Up to 20% of the day traveling within the county to assist at other schools, parks, and libraries.
