Support Assistant (TSA) – Annapolis High Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary and secondary grade levels. The TSA supervises students throughout the school day – inside the school building and at work sites – carrying out instructional tasks, supporting self‑care, and collecting data as outlined by the professional staff based upon individual student objectives.

The employee must be capable of performing any and all of the listed duties independently or with available staffing.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Participate in routine supervision of students throughout the school day within the school building and/or worksite/community environment, including assisting on/off bus and monitoring student entry and exit.
  • Assist students with social behavior, personal hygiene and self‑help skills, such as toileting, feeding, and grooming, during the school day and at off‑site locations.
  • Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implementing instructional plans as directed by the job coach and/or teacher.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in classroom, lunch, playground and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Collect and provide data related to student performance on instructional and behavioral goals to the supervising teacher.
  • Provide social, emotional and behavioral support, including implementation of behavior strategies and supports.
  • Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and off‑site training activities or community settings.
  • Participate in professional development, including workshops and in‑service training on specialized care needs, seizures, disruptive behavior, etc., as offered by the Board.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Formal academic courses or training in child development with specific applications to special education preferred.
Experience
  • None required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
  • Patience and ability to work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, or multiple disabilities.
  • Reliable attendance is essential.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing; Microsoft Office Suite).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Hold or be eligible for a Maryland Class C Driver’s License.
  • Reliable transportation available daily.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving required for board business that falls within scope of employment.
  • Personal vehicle required.
Physical Demands
  • Standing – < 1/3 of the time.
  • Walking – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
  • Sitting – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
  • Keyboarding – < 1/3 of the time.
  • Talking – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
  • Hearing – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
  • Driving – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
  • Other duties as required.
Vision
  • No special vision requirements.
  • Indoor environment – > 2/3 of the time.

  • Carry up to 50 pounds – 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
Travel Requirements
  • Daily travel within the county to assist at other schools, parks, libraries, etc.: 20% of the time.
