Kindergarten Assistant Teacher Assistant Teacher Position Description
The Kindergarten Assistant Teacher is a vital member of the classroom teaching team. The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in supervising, instructing, and guiding children within the classroom. In partnership with the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher establishes a safe and caring classroom community where each child’s strengths, opinions, actions, and thoughts are valued. The Assistant Teacher uses appropriate language and tone and utilizes the principles of Responsive Classroom in all interactions with the children.
The Assistant Teacher promotes the school’s mission and professionally conducts him/herself in all interactions with children, families, and staff.
- Works under the direct instruction of the Lead Teacher in the classroom and the general supervision of the Director of Lower School
- Assists the Lead Teacher in classroom set‐up in August and classroom break‐down in June
- Attends Classroom Meet and Greet at the start of the school year
- Participates in Arrival, Lunch, Recess, and Dismissal duties as assigned daily
- Assists the Lead Teacher in the supervision of children
- Assists the Lead Teacher in maintaining the classroom's cleanliness, organization, and safety (sweeps, wipes tables, washes art materials, returns used materials to proper places, etc.)
- Assists with daily attendance via My Compass in the absence of the lead teacher
- Assists Lead Teacher with clerical or office tasks (laminating, copying, bulletin boards, etc) as assigned and within assistants scheduled hours
- Assumes the role of Lead Teacher in the lead teacher’s absence
- Accompanies children to Links classes and supports the Links teachers as needed
- Attends all Lower School meetings called by the Director of Lower School
- Participates in scheduled staff Professional Development days as indicated on the school calendar
- Attends Lower School special events appropriate for grade level (Back to School Night, Grand friends’ Day,
The Friendly Beasts performance, etc.) - Attends Parent/Teacher Conferences in the fall and spring
- Submits requests for leave to the Head of Lower School and Informs Lead Teacher in advance of scheduled absences
- Immediately notifies the Head of Lower School and lead teacher when running late or taking unscheduled leave
- Refer parent questions concerning the growth and development of their children to the Lead Teacher
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Director of Lower School during designated hours, including, but not limited to, the following:
Calling parents in the absence of the lead teacher, assisting children in the bathroom, reading books, playing games, washing art supplies, filling water bottles, wiping tables, supervising special projects, covering in other classrooms, etc. - Assists the lead teacher with documentation, including recording children’s dialogue, taking photos, and writing anecdotal records.

- Arrives for work on time
- Is fully present during working hours, refraining from working on the computer, talking on the phone, or texting while responsible for the direct supervision of children
- Maintains the confidentiality of students and families
- Is courteous and respectful in all interactions with lead teacher, colleagues, and staff
- Four year degree
- Minimum two years of related experience in a school setting
- Familiarity or knowledge of child development, the Reggio Emilia Approach, Project Approach and/or emergent literacy
- High level of energy and initiative
- Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with Responsive Classroom a plus
