The Professional Development Instructor is responsible for preparing participants for workplace success through the delivery of comprehensive workforce readiness, career development, and professional skills training. Utilizing a person-centered approach, this position equips participants with the interpersonal, organizational, and professional competencies necessary to obtain and maintain competitive integrated employment.

The Professional Development Instructor delivers engaging instruction, based on pre-built abilIT curriculum, focused on communication, professionalism, self-advocacy, career exploration, workplace expectations, financial literacy, and employment readiness. This position works collaboratively with instructional staff, employment specialists, employers, and community partners to support participant success throughout the training and employment process.

Essential Responsibilities Workforce Readiness Instruction
  • Deliver workforce readiness curriculum in classroom, virtual, and hybrid settings.
  • Facilitate instruction in workplace communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, professionalism, and customer service.
  • Teach time management, organizational skills, workplace etiquette, and professional conduct.
  • Provide instruction related to self-advocacy, disability awareness, disclosure, and workplace accommodations.
  • Assist participants with the implementation of their DORS Individual Plans, ensuring goals are developed, implemented, monitored, and progress benchmarks are achieved.
  • Assist participants in identifying career goals and developing career plans.
  • Facilitate resume writing, cover letter development, and application completion.
  • Conduct mock interviews and provide individualized interview coaching.
  • Network with Job Developers and community partners to provide guest lecture series supplementary to the skills training program and enhance current curriculum to include volunteer service and outside educators.
Participant Support & Coaching
  • Provide individualized coaching and mentoring.
  • Monitor participant engagement and progress toward workforce readiness goals.
  • Identify barriers to employment and collaborate with program staff to develop support strategies.
  • Promote participant self-confidence, independence, and workplace readiness.
Recruitment, Outreach, and Enrollment
  • Support participant recruitment efforts to ensure enrollment goals are achieved.
  • Conduct outreach to referral sources, including DORS counselors, workforce development agencies, schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to promote the abilIT program.
  • Conduct participant screenings and initial assessments to determine program interest, readiness, and eligibility.
  • Coordinate and facilitate participant interviews, ensuring candidates understand program expectations, training requirements, and employment outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and Technology Instructor to evaluate participant suitability and readiness for technology training and employment pathways.
  • Assist with participant selection and enrollment decisions based on program criteria and participant goals.
  • Coordinate orientation activities and support participant onboarding to ensure a successful transition into the program.
Program Documentation & Compliance
  • Complete progress notes, daily logs, timesheets, individual planning activities, and other documentation thoroughly, accurately, and promptly.
  • Monitor achievement of workforce readiness benchmarks and outcomes.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Technology Instructors and Job Development Specialists to support participant success.
  • Participate in case reviews and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Develop relationships with community partners and workforce development stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position must have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
